IT heads: judge these computer specs

bios says it's got AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual core 4000+, 2 HD's at 500GB each, 2 gig ram. haven't opened it up to see the mobo but i know its Asus. judging by the size of this bitch and the 6 slots in the back (possibly all PCI-E) i'm guessing it's not a complete PoS

my computer knowledge is marginal at best. I know what these numbers mean but i wouldn't know how to gauge this computer (mainly the processor) to the times.

scale of 1-10, comparing it to the computers that are out nowadays, what would you give it? extra credit: how would you use it if you weren't in the market for a computer

Seems kind of crazy to have dual core 4000+ and 2 500 gig hd and only 2 gigs of ram, it should have 4 gigs of ram then it would sound pretty good. I'd give it a 6.

The Cpu is from around 2005, so what do you expect us to say about a 4 year old Computer? That kind of hardware should be written of when its 3 years old, scrapped and something new installed

not likely that all 6 slots are pci-e with the specs you showed I would say 2 are pci-e x16 and the rest are regular pci. there might be 1 pci-e x1 though. As for the cpu, there are way better cpu's than that. It's not a complete PoS, but wouldn't be sufficient power for me.

How much $ for that thing?

of course, seeing how old the cpu is I would say the motherboard has maybe 1 pci-e x16 slot, but it's possible that it's AGP and the rest PCI slots

Speed of HDs is very important if those are like 5400rpm they're junk. Also they should be raided most likely... and yeah 2GB ram is really low... I run 8GB on my PC and 16GB on my mac :P

It's not bad though and certainly better than the vast majority of computers I see sitting around at non computer peoples houses :P

If was a main machine to be used by a designer, gamer, or developer I'd give it a 5... If I were judging this based on just a computer at some random persons house I'd give it an 8

Extra credit: I've got a computer bone yard over here... enough parts to build two or three machines at least... However you COULD downsize the case and hook it up to your TV. Get a wireless mouse and keyboard and stash them in your coffee table. Use it to stream / browse / whatever to deliver media to your TV

i'll open it up and check - you may be right i was just taking a stab in the dark by looking at the back.

the machine was free

ok so the processor isn't up to snuff. but i could sure use 1000GB or hd space should i just shove it in the garage and make it backup storage? light gaming?

HD's say "WDC WD5000AAKS - 0" and "WDC WD5000KS - 00M". so 5000?

yeah it's not a friggin gateway. this thing used to be a file server for a small office and stored/transferred lots of hi res images and raw video. but it was given to the company as the IT guys hand me down so I was sure he wasn't giving them his good stuff. i have a small graveyard myself. i've been piecing computers together and giving them to family/friends when their stuff breaks. i hate to scrap a computer that works fine just because it's "old"

thanks for the extra credit suggestion

I was thinking that too. 2 gigs of ram is not enough.

opened it up...

2 free ram slots so it should be able to go up to 4 gigs

the mobo is smaller than the case - only has 4 slots - one looks AGP other 2 PCI or PCI-e and then a little short one (forgot what thats for)

350w power source

seems like if i maxed out the ram it might be good for some gaming but i barely do that nowadays. i'm thinking leave it as is for file backups

i appreciate all the help - thanks for schooling me
