I had another confrontation with a bear

...today. I took my Jack Russell up into the wild for a romp...and we/he spotted a bear that was walking away from us. He took off after the bear and the bear stopped and turned as my dog continued toward it. The bear began to come toward my dog with head lowered...so I fired my .357 into the air...the bear halted but my dog continued towards the bear and was getting to close so I fired again and this time the bear turned away and ran off. I think maybe my dog is not to smart.

Your dog will get you killed one day man. What's wrong with domesticated animals is that sometimes they do not have that built in software that tells them what to fear and not fear. The dog should obviously have feared the bear automatically.

It's always a good story when the guy telling it was packing that much heat for a walk in the woods. :D

But I would advise working on getting that dog to listen when you call him back. A few weeks of intensive sit/stay/recall training and that'd be the end of it I'd wager.

Well...where ever I go I have either a weapon on me or in my truck. This is bear and lion country and I have had previous encounters...thus the .357...which will easily stop either of them.

As for training my dog...a Jack Russell does not train well...and even if one has them professionally trained they usually do not stay trained...that is at the least...what one website has to say about them and others have told me. They are kind of a devil dog. In the past I have had pretty good luck with him as my other dog would keep him in line. He was just weaned when I got him and she was grown...and bigger...and would keep him pretty well disciplined. I had to put her down and since then he has been distressed and I don't know if he will get over her or not.

We have a few bears in the woods behind my house. I hear on the police scanner almost every night about them going down the hill into town. I still have yet to see them. I even went outside with flashlights to find them when the police scare them back up the road.

The road leads right to my driveway.

A couple of years ago a bear was coming down into the neighborhood and rummaging...and I like you...never saw it. After a month or so it was trapped and relocated.

i suggest not believing everything you read and actually trying things out for yourself. i have a jack russel and a miniature fox terrier and they are both trained. both have no problems with voice commands and listen to me at all times. even have had the jack back off of a small rabbit it had captured. they both are very smart dog breeds and will train the owners if given the chance by not training them. guessing you have never seen a russel or terrier act up in a show before or perhaps watched what is a common breed to use for circus tricks?
