why is it interesting. does not stop freedom of speech, just does as always and can make people accountable for libel for what they say and gives people the ability to see their day in court. google makes it clear in their tos about giving out information and she followed it. they demanded a court order and she went and got one. nobody has a right to hide their identity or anything like that and in all honesty this is not the first time courts have made this ruling. the womans lawyers also said on tv that they will persue action and try to get a judgement.

Er, the whole reason she's doing the lawsuit is because she IS being persecuted for her opinions. A better thing to say would be "I feel proud to live in a country where you can freely share your opinions behind a shroud of anonymity if needbe to protect from persecution." or something like that, though even still you could still be persecuted anyways - they just won't know your name or where you live.

The net becoming more social, unfortunately anonymity is going down the tubes. Even if you're being private, anyone you're in contact with may not be and may spill the beans so to speak. It sucks really.

Agreed

It will be crazy to see how this turns out. I don't see any of this ending well to be honest.

The blogger is 100% right...blogs are often used as personal diaries to rant ones mind much like you would write in a paper diary.

Blogs are not necessarily to communicate to a public forum. Her identity should have never been revealed.

A libel case against her saying those rude things would have failed in court

She has an excellent case for herself and is smart to pursue it against Google

The problem is once you put it up online for everyone to see, it's public. If she wanted to rant such that no one else would see it, she could have made it a private blog.

I've learned that lesson myself. I once made a post on my MySpace blog that was critical of a couple family members, and even though none of them were on Myspace or ever looked at my page, they ended up finding my post (through Google) and pitching a fit. I'm not a violent or mad person or anything, and part of why I'm not is the need to vent now and then, but naturally the subject of the vent would never understand that. So yea, I learned my lesson and my Myspace blog is now vanilla and boring (I probably haven't posted on it in over a year).

Barely anyone went to my blog too but the person that counted did and that's all that mattered - such is this case. Google outing her identity...not sure what to say about that. I think it's fucked up but if they were court-ordered to do it, what are they supposed to do?

a personal diary can be kept on a computer. Once its online and if it isn't made private it would seem she wanted it to be read. Also people dont realize they are not as invisible online as they think they are. I think people think they are invisible so their dark nature really comes out. She wouldnt say that shit to the woman's face.

right... imagine a society where a politician, or a president can sue the fuck out of you for saying he is a crook, or dishonest, a dictator, etc... But your free speech is safe because the "government" doesnt take you away? lol Absolute free speech is the freedom to say what you want without punishment... But that doesnt exist, free speech is restricted, accept that, but how restricted do you want it to be? Nobody wins when being rude or insulting becomes punishable.

thats not what the founding fathers had in mind. They lived in a place where you could be taken away and left to rot in a jail cell for what you said.

In the end though should you really be able to say ANYTHING with impunity? I can tell all my friends that Obama blows goats, and we can all laugh about it. But if I buy commercial time on a TV station and run an ad that says "I know for a fact that Obama blows goats, and in fact he loves to swallow the goat cum!", should I expect to be protected under freedom of speech? Or what if I run an ad that says Obama touches little kids? Should I be protected for that? (Fuck the Secret Service is probably going to pay me a visit just for typing that out).

I'm all for free speech, but fuck, there is a limit...

dude, I don't care about your founding fathers, free speech is not an "only in America" concept... At the very base of it, you cannot be "free to speak" if you get punished for that speech..

As I said, free speech is limited and I'm not claiming it shouldn't be. But how restricted to you want your freedom of speech to be? Maliciously lying about someone is one thing, calling someone a whore, a retard or a lunatic is something else... Once you get punished or censored for that, like it's happening over here, your freedom to speak your mind is getting restricted to dangerous levels..
