Help - My wifes computer might have a virus

My wifes computer started bugging out the other night when she turned it on. It's a Fujitsu FMV Biblo laptop purchased in Japan so it has the Japanese keyboard and all Japanese type. Since I am no computer hardware wiz and she has trouble translating the computer terminology from Japanese to English I am unable to figure out what is wrong with it.

When she turnes it on, it comes up with a black screen like a DOS looking screen, some of the translation she said it was safe mode, windows networking, etc. and also has a countdown of numbers, then it goes to a screen that says Fujitsu, then windows xp comes up and her desktop with her icons, then after 30 seconds...the same process happens over again, and then again, and keeps going.

Not sure if it is a virus or a hardware problem or drivers.

Any help would be cool, the Japanese computer place gave her a phone quote of $250 which is expensive. Thanks guys.

No, since it is all in Japanese I thought I might risk messing up her computer...

Start it in safe mode and do a system restore to a restore point date before the computer started having trouble.

Sounds like it could could be the sasser virus from the way you described it. If it is, just google sasser virus on another comp and you can find instructions to fix it. If that's not it then you probably will need to reinstall.

Could very well be,since the translation is a issue that will also eliminate if it's a powersupply.best to try that instead of sending it to a shop and they charge you 250 bucks or say to pay us more to fix it?

I don't remember setting any restore points for her, but are there was automatically made? I did go in safe mode yesterday and trasfered her my documents folder with all her files and images to my external hard drive in case it crashed.

I just did a system restore to one of the automatic checkpoints in July. We were all excited that things were good, but when we plugged in the Linksys wireless-G USB adapter into the computer the problem started again.

Any ideas...

based on this, it seems to happen when you plug in the wireless adapter?

-bad wireless driving causing issues, upgrade the driver; OR
-bad wireless adapter

might not be related to your issue, but I would look at those two things just in case.

Not sure what is going on...I shut down her computer, and asked her which usb port she usually has the wireless adapter in...I stuck it in there...look like things were going to go bad, but ended up staying in windows and going online. I went to linksys for the driver update...does not seem to be any since the one for Vista....were still running XP so no new drivers.

I did notice one of those microsoft annoying "do you want to sent a report" pop up though, said no...and still did not crash. I am confused now.

I hear you, but if something is fixable I will figure it out, plumbing, electrical, plastering, etc. I just don't mess with cars.

My wife's laptop, but it might be fixed now after the system restore, since she is looking at puppy photos online.

I will touch base with you soon regarding our project, oh I also found a couple more good domains.

same thing happened to my laptop last week. After the winxp screen, it just restarted over and over again. Ended up formatting it. 2 hours later, it's working better than new =P

Don't put in the offending Ethernet adapter/card etc, and load up several anti-malware programs and run them.

First try malwarebytes http://www.malwarebytes.org/
AVG Free http://free.grisoft.com
Superantispyware http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html
Spybot Search and Destroy http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/
Adaware Free http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

You should eliminate a malware issue being the cause first.
