Where to buy a new laptop with XP?

Is there an online store that has a ton of laptops with xp?
When I go to Dell or NewEgg they only have a couple and I want more choices.
whered a good place to go?

I just got a computer with vista and had to return it cuz I hated vista. Cost me $165 in restocking fees btw :/

since offering XP is technically a downgrade, i dont think any suppliers offer it on a broad range of models. I dont think microsoft wants XP sold beside vista on all models. but im just talking out of my ass.

I tried it many times and its not that easy to reformat a vista machine down to xp. the hardware reads vista only so it would crash as soon as I put the xp disk in and it would do the hardware compatibility list.

where is this "magic cd" that removes vista and installs xp on a machine where the hardware reads vista only?

Then try with Windows 7. It work like a XP, but maybe you will have problems with the drivers

There is no such thing as proprietary hardware when it comes to operating systems..... well unless u r dealing with mac but still ... I have been able to install OSX in pcs and windows xp in macs ....

There is no "magic cd" to install xp... it is just called an xp installation disc (OEM n such)....once u pop it in it will show u a blue screen where it'll show u it is loading the basic win components and hardware drivers (u need to restart the computer.. don't do it through the windows interface), it then asks u if u want to install xp or do something else.. at this point there is no such thing as a "hardware compatibility wizard" that will pop up.....follow the instructions and format c.... then install xp on the existing partition...

This all happens through a non-windows interface.. in the end the installation will take u to xp and THEN u might see some compatibility issues (drivers) at which point u just have to go to the manufacturers site of the specific hardware which needs an xp-specific driver to work... for instance the video card....

It ain't rocket science mon.. but u need to have some practice installing xp...

It's called the WindowsXP cd

You boot on the CD, scrap the current partition and create a new set

Next time, ask before you hand in you PC for a refound

I couldnt even run the hardware compatibility list, never mind getting to the delete/create partition.
it crashed. I've reformatted my xp machines many many times but when I tried with the vista it would not do it

my machine was totally wiped clean with no os, only the bios. I put the xp cd in and it would crash in the middle of running the hd compatibility list.
Ive heard of going intot he bios and changing the speed to SATA, or something. but I couldnt find it.

Dell still sells laptops with XP already installed. Check their business section for them.

And as you've experienced, installing XP after the fact is a pain, and may not function the same. Pre-installed XP is definitely the way to go, even if it costs a little extra.

On a related note, Windows 7 is basically Vista with less bugs and a better looking GUI (very nice task bar, etc). Eventually 7 will likely dominate, but best to wait awhile until there's less bugs and faster hardware (ie. Vista and 7 have a lot of DRM that strains some current machines). Imho, for most folks buying a new Windows based computer in the next year or two, XP is the best choice.

First of all, Sorry for the "idiot" remark before. That wasent nice and i apologize.

I dont know what your budget is, but I suggest you contact your local IBM/lenovo business dealer, and tell them about what specs you are looking for, and that you want it with XP.

I run a MS partner company, and we are IBM certified as well. Untill we have certified Win7, all new PC's that we sell, is with WinXP if the computer is going to be use in any of the IT infrastructure we are responsible for.

So it IS possible to get it, but I dont think you will find a consumer dealer that will sell it for you.

Find a local dealer here http://www.lenovo.com/us/en/

The biggest issue now is finding proper/compatible drivers. NLite, a CD-R and a few hours with Google will usually get you up and running.

If you call Dell, they will put together whatever laptop you want and sell you an XP cd WITH the drivers to run the hardware or even install XP for you. Costs extra, think I paid $180 the last time.

Toshiba will also if you call them.

If you do enough sales to get a Gold Team Rep, you can have them spec out anything you want. I ended up with a Latitude E6500(n). Only thing I had to do was replace the wireless (broadcom 802.11n shitsux) with an old intel WLAN NIC. Works 100% with XP and OpenSUSE.

I just did it this week on my toshiba satellite L355d.
last time i tried i couldn't get all the drivers. this time i got it all working right. yes it IS a pain in the butt! becuase drivers are scattered around.
first, as you discovered, you have to go into bios and change sata from ahci to compatibility. or you get the bsod after it starts to boot off xp disc.
then e.g. go to website and find drivers. on toshiba, i did a search and a uk division of toshiba had most of them. then also go to e.g. realtek and ati websites and get their drivers for xp. to power the sound and video cards and chipsets.
a really vexing problem was that the ati driver for the 3100 integrated video chipset was supposed to also install and include the southbridge driver, BUT, ati has crappy drivers ever since time, and it doesn't install as advertised, so you need to go download separately their ati southbridge driver and then sm bus driver problem is resolved.
yes, it IS a pain. it can be done. getting one with it all done for you is much easier.

99% of the time, its enough to dl the controller driver (depends on the manufactor) and specify it during the hardware detection
