Windows 7 vs Windows XP

Windows 7 users: does the new OS has any real advantages over Windows XP?

No flame please, just facts.

I had windows 7 on my lap top and I really liked it when it expired I put xp back on there and I have been having headaches every sense. Firefox locks up. Its a lot slower. So my guess is windows 7 uses less resources. but thats just a theory I'll have to research it some and let you know. All I do know is I like windows 7.

Windows 7 definitely does not use less resources than XP. While it may be better than Vista, it is definitely still no XP in the performance department.

I tried windows 7 on my main desktop, it's a few years old and I play online games with it. After tweaking down some services and other stuff, I could not get the memory overhead of win7 below about 360ishMB. Plus, each game that I played had a noticeable choppy moment, every minute or so. So, I reinstalled XP with a slimmed down nLite install, cutting out some services and applying a couple other tweaks. This XP install only uses 140ishMB, and no more skipping in games. Plus, I noticed that files copied to my usb flash drives a lot quicker.

Yes but it would take up a lot of time/space to list them all here.

Hmm but what's about new features (I mean some useful ones but not something "wow, now it looks so cool and colorful *being over the moon*")?

7 runs quite nicely on lower spec'd computers like my little Atom based Netbooks with only 2 gig of RAM.

Ok, can you call at least 3 the most useful and important features in your opinion? Is that easy enough?

Faster than what? Please not my question. It's about Windows 7 vs Windows XP, but not Windows 7 vs Windows Vista which is slow like a dead turtle.

Windows 7 is just like XP .. it runs fine. I think that it deals with more than one core alot better than XP did. Other than that, it's the same. I'm very happy with it.

Windows 7 includes a number of new features, such as advances in touch and handwriting recognition, support for virtual hard disks, improved performance on multi-core processors,[32][33][34][35] improved boot performance, DirectAccess, and kernel improvements. Windows 7 adds support for systems using multiple heterogeneous graphics cards from different vendors (Heterogeneous Multi-adapter), a new version of Windows Media Center,[36] a Gadget for Windows Media Center, improved media features, the XPS Essentials Pack and Windows PowerShell being included, and a redesigned Calculator with multiline capabilities including Programmer and Statistics modes along with unit conversion. Many new items have been added to the Control Panel, including ClearType Text Tuner, Display Color Calibration Wizard, Gadgets, Recovery, Troubleshooting, Workspaces Center, Location and Other Sensors, Credential Manager, Biometric Devices, System Icons, and Display.[37] Windows Security Center has been renamed to Windows Action Center (Windows Health Center and Windows Solution Center in earlier builds) which encompasses both security and maintenance of the computer. Nice reply to someone trying to give you some feedback

I use win7 on 2 different notebooks, both dualcore intels one with 3 gb ram and another with 4 gb, one with SSD disk and another with 7200 RPM disk.

Both outperform vista no questions asked. Notepad is faster than ever and love the world clock thing so I can see what time it is different places in the world

I use win7 64 bit version. file transfer/copy, start up, running/openning apps at the the same time and video encoding is faster than xp(or vista32bit and win7 32bit) even with my old desktop with only 2gig of ram.

and oh Photoshop 64bit rocks!

and note: you need to turn off the windows search(indexing option), or the system will crawl. lol

eh? doesn't the index come into play only when you do a system search? i looked into turning it off and can only find the option to exclude areas to index, i can exclude all areas i reckon.

not an expert here, just askin. running windows 7 here and it's head and shoulders better than vista for sure and xp with all my adobe products.

i'm not an expert too, but based on my experience, when windows search(indexing option) turned on I got a slow system response, and did a little research, a lot of users got the same problem as mine. because it (indexing option) does do a lot of disk access.

it can be safely disabled though through service.msc and look for Windows search and disable it.

side fyi: Disabling it doesn't mean you can't use the search function on windows although "searching" will take a little longer...

It's fast, stable, lots of nice little new features. You can actually have more then 3 gigs of RAM woohoo. I'm extremely happy with it. I never bothered with Vista and I loved XP after I finally had it working the way I wanted but Windows 7 is a master piece by MS standards.

Because the ppl. can't answer to the question correctly. They say something like "wow! it's faster than vista", "wow it's shining!", "works like a charm", "it supports more than 3Gb" etc.

These "feedbacks" are not informative. For example, XP64 and Vista64 also can address more than 3Gb, but Windows 7 x86 - CAN'T. So it's not a feature of Windows 7, but a feature of any operating system which has a 64-bit edition (XP, Vista, Windows 7).

Now about the links to blogs, reviews, articles. All these docs have lots of useless info such as: "Windows 7 has a built-in voice control" (hey, I'm not a disabled person!), "Windows 7 has new colorful interface" (sorry but it's not a feature, perhaps it's better for someone's eyes but not something to be helpful at work), Windows 7 supports multi-touch control for tablet PC's (I'm a webmaster, so I'm working at computer which has both keyboard and mouse) etc...

This is why I asked to name at least 3 (not too much right?) REALLY USEFUL features that say: "man, you definitely must upgrade ASAP!"

Hope you've got my point. Thanks to everyone in advance!

I didn't say anything like that, I posted links to help you. You just said it to be a smartass which is fine, I couldn't care any less.

Well no shit, you came to a porn forum asking for info on an OS. That's like going to a tech forum and asking them what pussy feels like.

It takes about 10 minutes to scroll through them and find what's useful to you. What's useful to you might not be to someone else. Although some of those articles have some info that's not all that helpful but damn you can browse them all in no time and find the stuff that matters. Hell I even posted some articles so you wouldn't have to look in google.

Do you really think that GFY is a PORN FORUM? Personally I always thought it's a WEBMASTER board. Should I explain you the difference between webmaster and a regular porn surfer?

I just converted from XP Pro x64 to 7 x64, and love it. There's a learning curve, but that's quick to get over. I've never spent more than 5 minutes on Vista, so probably that learning curve is even smoother if you had. By no means am I an expert (or even an advanced user), but in the past couple of weeks, I've noticed:

ADVANTAGES
1) Noticeably faster booting and shut-downs...
2) I noticed with XP that after booting up, the first time I loaded a program like Firefox, Windows Explorer, etc would take a lot longer than subsequent attempts (presumably it's a RAM thing), but with 7, it's fast everytime.
3) I have a system monitor gadget on constantly, and all 4 cores are working for just about any application...MUCH more efficiently than XP was. Overall performance also seems better. I have a quad core 2.5 overclocked to 3.0 and 8GB RAM and although I haven't run performance tests, the system at least seems to perform better...and thats XP with most services and effects off, unencrypted, versus Windows 7 with almost all default services and effects on and TrueCrypt encrypted. There is an issue with Windows Explorer mentioned later, but that might can be resolved...I need to play with it more.
4) The search feature is convenient for searching folders/subfolders full of files. XP worked great, but with 7, you don't have to leave the current window and it searches on the fly as you type.
5) The appearance and effects are really cool. I ultimately turned off most effects in XP for performance, but with 7 the effects are cool enough that I leave them on. Appearance is more effectively customized with themes or even wallpaper slideshows.
6) The gadgets are useful extensions integrated directly into the desktop
7) The firewall is good, although I recommend getting "Windows 7 Firewall Control" for free if you want more control and to limit outgoing traffic.

DISADVANTAGES
1) RAM usage constantly sits around 17%, even now with just Firefox portable running. I have 8GB of RAM, so that amounts to just over 1.4GB. That's not really a disadvantage if you have sufficient RAM, but if you're trying to put this on a 1GB system, then you might have some issues (I suspect).
2) Windows Explorer can take a long time to read a directory with a lot of files. Perhaps this is because I have Windows Search on...not sure.
3) Windows Explorer does seem to crash more often than on XP, although it recovers and is easy to load up again, although you lost your place...

Anyway, this is my observations as a complete noob to 7. I'm sure there's more points I should make, but that's all that's coming to me off the top of my head. I hope it helps.

Is that true that Windows 7 won't allow one to play Blu-Ray videos?

I think you have to install a third party app like PowerDVD to play blu-ray movie discs on Win7.

Using it only one day and it great even better then Vista, more stable... drivers are not problem with Window 7 Ultimate, because it allready have drivers for all hardware.

It's much faster on new hardwer.
My boot time is 25 sec , and on XP it was 50 sec

I dont really know the features, but I noticed that XP 64 is more expensive than Vista with free upgrade to Windows 7 ..strange

That's what I think. You can get modified versions of Vista (obviously hacked, but as long as you have purchased original software, you will feel guilt free ;)) that runs perfect. I'm using both vista on my desktop and 7 on my laptop. Usability wise, I do the same things on both machines.
