Scanning typed documents into raw text? Need help

Is there a scanner I could use to scan documents with text and images?
I typed some things up last year, and there are some pictures I just taped into certain parts of it and I'd like to be able to scan it all keeping the pictures where they are and have them surrounded by raw editable text.. Do I need to scan to .pdf, or what?

Does the scanner have this Optical Character Recognition built in, or is it best to make a hi resolution scan into some image format and THEN use some type of software?

Thanks

If you have Office 2003 or 2007, you can use the included Microsoft Office Document Scanning (found in Microsoft Office tools) to OCR the document on any scanner.

I do believe that there is a export to Word feature as well. Haven't used it in a while though.

any OCR will do, pages suggested to scan at 600dpi or more
ABBYY FineReader is a good one http://finereader.abbyy.com/ gives a pretty decent quality
