WTF did I just do? Did I fry the motherboard? HELP.

So I have this old Dell desktop that I was using as file storage/backup. It was old, 2.0 mHz or something like that. It had 128 memory so I bought two 520 sticks and stuck it in. As soon as I did that and turned it on I smelled familiar smell of burning wires and feeling "you fucked up". Did my motherboard just crapped its pants because I added way too much? Is it motherboard or something else?

Quite possible that the new ram was trying to suck too much power through the RAM slots... put it back to normal with the old ram and watch for more smoke. Look closely at the new ram to see if there are any blackened bits. Eeks.

Are you sure that you bought correct ram?
There is DDR, DDR2, DDR3 memory sticks - they're all different and not compatible with each other

Also some boards work with double sided ram, some only single sided, etc...

If it only had 128 ram in it, it definitely wasn't even close to DDR ram.

Try SDRAM

and if he bought the wrong type of ram it wouldn't fit in the DIMM's no matter how hard he tried so obviously he didn't by the wrong ram. There's no way in hell to fit DDR2 ram in a pc that's made for DDR and there sure as hell is no way DDR ram would fit in an sdram slot. lol

2Mhz? That's gonna be, uh.. DIPP. At the best, DIMM.

2Ghz? May actually be RIMM. If the memory that was in there was covered entirely in metal down to and clipped by the pins, yeah - you just totally fucked up.

guess not. I Had no idea they were different. I just looked at pins i think it was 240 pin. All I know they looked the same and fit in the slots.
