Buyers Feel Regret as Cash for Clunkers Final Tally Is Released

Old news (14 days) but still worthy of it's own thread with a Sherlock pic.

Quote:
Primary reason: They are now facing a $275-$350-per-month car payment that didn't exist prior to acquiring the car or truck," said the report. "That amount, they say, could negatively impact the total family budget more than expected prior to buying the new vehicle."

What went through these people's minds? That their clunker would cover the cost of the new car or that Obama would take care of their car payments?

I always wondered how someone that could not afford to update their clunker was suddenly going to be able to pay for a new car.

I know a couple people that did trade-ins. They had clunkers laying around that were not even in use. No money issues though.

If there was no one to take advantage of the working class, we'd have no ruling class

We're going to squeeze every last cent out of the lower-middle class. Retirement is becoming a myth....& the young middle class planning on becoming rich one day, through proper/safe investments are now going to finish out their lives in a trailer park.

People today are far too timid & afraid of their government to spark a revolution. So this path we're on....will no doubt continue for the foreseeable future.

Thank god some of their payment was supplemented by my tax dollars - just another socialist experiment at work!

At least I can get a low-miles car at a decent price for the winter months.

And they'll have it for 60 months

That sort of overoptimistic assessment of financial capability (I'll be able to pay the balloon payment, property will always go up, etc) was what got us in this mess in the first place.

I sat and thought about the cash for clunkers, I have an 85 Checy C-10, 189k on it. It runs like new still, air still works yada yada, Good solid truck, that I use everyday. It's paid for, with what I have done to it in repairs etc I have 1200 bucks in it total. It cost me 33 bucks a month for insurance. Any new truck I would have gotten for it that would have the same usefulness would be 20k+ (Well, not the same usefulness because I would hate to toss a ton of lumber, bricks etc into a new truck and ruin it.. and that new truck would cost me about 110 bucks a month in insurance. plus have a car payment of around 400 bucks. In no way did it make any sense to destroy my good working truck, to get into a new truck that was just going to cost me a shitload of money.

christ what a stupid idea this was.

not only did people get into more debt than they should of, but gouged and raped by car dealerships to get into new cars that they didnt need.

my friends neighbor traded in her old Chrysler minivan to get a chevy truck. She said she regrets it now because not only does she have to make a $600/mo payment, but also her car insurance went up $30/mo. Her minivan was completely paid off, but the sales people assured her it would be a good idea to do this... plus she has a loan at 15% for 72 months!

personally i think this was an idea between the gov't and banks to fuck people even more

The numbers in that article don't add up. Either they left out how the survey was conducted or it was just written to seem much more significant than it actually is.

I was helping my mother in law buy a car for the past few weeks and saw some of the 'clunkers' that were being traded in, some of which I wouldn't have minded owning, like the Range Rover and Maserati, most of the clunkers were newer and nicer than what my mother in law drives (a 17 year old Eagle Wagon) but her's wasn't eligible for the program (22MPG). I get the idea most of the people could probably afford their new cars.

Exactly you still have to qualify, it's not like you automatically get a new car

Think about it.

1. Banks go to government with this program idea knowing car manufacturers are hurting
2. Manufacturers say OMG plz do this we'll be rich!
3. Americans go OMG lets build more cars, I will get to work again, we'll be rich!
4. Banks give out loans to idiots who can't afford them
5. Within 6 months X% of people who bought these cars get them repo'd or voluntarily hand them over to the bank
6. Bank goes to auctions, sells cars
7. Banks go to government after they lose divisions due to car losses.
8. Banks get bailout money to cover the spread (which the books inflate)
9. Banks get rich
10. Everyone else gets fucked

So who are the patsys here? Government, Auto industry, and the consumer.

America is run by banks and this was a massive cash grab. In 5-11 months you will see steps 5+ on my list happen.

I've always been convinced that it was just another cash grab for the car companies.

The EPA requirements were kind of a joke. For it to truly be a program to swap in more efficient vehicles, the standards should have been much higher. Some people were improving their gas mileage only 5 miles! That's ridiculous.

People that truly drive clunkers are typically poor. They don't have money to get a new car or a newer car with better gas mileage. So what we should have done was given these poor people an opportunity to get rid of their unreliable piece of shit vehicle by trading it in for a used car with better mileage of some varying degree. This would get some real POS vehicles off the streets, it would help out the poor families that can't afford reliable transportation, and in the end it would probably amount to the same amount of gas efficiency savings, while costing much less.

Although the administration of that would have been a pure nightmare.

Shhhhhh. Stop pointing out the root of the problem. People won't be able to blame Obama anymore. After 8 years of everyone else blaming Bush the people who voted for him need someone of their own to blame.

I have a 2004 Ford Explorer that recently broke down on me - first time in 90k miles. Right now I'm faced with trying to fix this old truck up, or buying a new one. I want to a buy a new one; I don't want to spend money on new tires, a tune up, and a few other things, only to have a truck with 90k miles on it that might break down. My wife wants to fix it.

It's my wife's truck, so we'll fix it.

The American people truly are now nothing more than lambs going to slaughter.
Try and wake them up, you're a r#dical.
Fuck it.
I hardly even try, any more, especially with people I care very deeply for.
They're the first to come to me with their problems, and the last to listen to me.

I would LOVE to have been able to get back in the car business in time to take advantage of all of the action that's coming.. When all of the repo action comes down BLAM you can buy shit for nothing, it's beautiful.

Same with housing, when everyone runs scared, it's beautiful.. homes worth 100k that idiots paid 200k or even 300k for you can buy for say fifty? ... Beautiful

I could make so god damned much money if I wouldn't have been not doing ANYTHING since 2003!! I've never bought anything and not doubled my money on it.. except for two times out of hundreds.. TWO times I got stuck for small amounts
