LONDON (Reuters) - A group of schoolchildren who reared a lamb from birth and named it Marcus has overridden objections by parents and rights activists and voted to send the animal to slaughter.

Marcus the six-month-old lamb has now been culled, the head teacher of the primary school in Kent confirmed on Monday, after the school's council -- a 14-member group of children aged 6 to 11 -- voted 13-1 to have him killed.

The decision has provoked fury among animal-loving celebrities, animal and human rights campaigners and the parents of some of the children, and led to threats against Lydd primary school and its teachers, according to a member of staff.

I was a child (many years back) and I had plenty of animals, and I would've NEVER sent one of them to the slaughterhouse.

Back in the day people, before everyone got fucking lazy, grew their own food, raised their own food, slaughtered their own food, made their own clothes, built their own homes, etc. etc. etc.

We want to be lazy but people get mad and protest when wholesale slaughter happens because they have to keep up with the needs of all those lazy assholes who can't do anything for themselves anymore.

These kids are 6 to 11, they really have no concept of life and death.

I don't even eat meat, and I say do it. If that's what the kids chose than that's what they get. Give it 3 weeks and the kids start missing Marcus, then the reality will sink in.

Wouldn't be surprised if some of those kids grow up never eating lamb again.

I think as it was brought up as a pet it should of been handled in a different way. I don't think farmers name their live stock (or do they)
Yes it's food and wool but I believe there are more around & they only sold it to raise £90 to get a pig...... Kids do have emotions and this is a loss to them.
Lets start eating our dogs

Interesting. Didn't make mainstream news here in UK.

There's a school like that near here, it has a working farm on site. Teaches kids where our food comes from and gets them involved if they aren't academicly inclined. I think it's a brilliant idea. They'll probably value the meat they eat all the more now they can relate it to the death of an animal.

As to the animal hugging hippies ......

I say good for them. There is a huge disassociation that people now have with their food. Meat comes in a box or in a cellophane covered tray. It teaches them some respect. Kids who grow up on farms know this, so why shouldn't city kids learn about how the food gets to their table. Maybe they will appreciate it a bit more.

It's a farm and shit like that happens, sell off excess animals in order to buy others or feed. During the fall we would sell off our excess stock and keep a few to butcher ourselves and fill our freezers.
