Thinking about movin to Chicago so my daughter can go to a nice school like this

On September 24, Derrion Albert, a 16-year-old Chicago public school student, was brutally beaten to death in a large street fight while walking home from school. The brawl, caught on video by another student, involved at least 50 teenagers, most of whom attend Christian Fenger Academy High School in Roseland.
According to most accounts, Albert was drawn into the fight as he walked to a city bus stop. Apparently, his attackers had no grudge against him. Four teenagers are currently being held without bond on first-degree murder charges.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Fenger students have repeatedly fought on the streets before and after school. Students from the Roseland neighborhood surrounding the school, known locally as the “Ville,” have clashed with another group of students from Altgeld Gardens, the largest public housing project in Chicago. The development is located five miles southeast of the school, separated from the city by a complex of railroad and industrial complexes.

The students from Altgeld Gardens have attended Fenger since the Chicago Public School (CPS) board transformed the school that used to serve their neighborhood, Carver High, into a selective-enrollment military academy.

At least five Chicago teenagers have died in similar violence since the beginning of the school year a month ago, and at least seven others have been wounded.

Theres always been fights at school, who here (males and females) didnt get into a little schoolyard scrap.

But the level of violence occuring today is NOTHING like the "meet me after school punk" fights we had growing up.

These savages split this kids head in the street with a 2x4. he wasnt even involved, just a passerby walking home from school. Cracked his skull open and left him in the road.

Words cant even describe this type of behavior. Animalistic is about the only word I can think of.

Oh shut the fuck up, I live 20 miles from that school mentioned and went to BGHS a blue ribbon school recognized by the U.S. state department of education.



10 miles from BGHS is Stevenson HS where my little brother went. It was ranked #69th best high school in the entire country.

That is a bit of a joke. Most schools are just fine. We used to hear about inner city schools being iffy places but that was by the standards of the country living area where I went to school.

If you are going to judge a whole nation's school by isolated incidents, they don't let your toddlers go to school in Scotland either because a madman might come into one of them and shoot kids. Things happen, it doesn't damn the every other school.

I'm from Chicago and can echo the sentiments that yes, there are some very fine schools there (and yes, Stevenson is one of them).

Part of the problem right now in Chicago, is that many schools have been closed due to budget cuts/resources etc. And, kids are being bused to other schools outside of their area, which creates a situation where rival gangs (yea, i guess gang kids go to school or whatever) come into contact with each other more frequently.

Either way, the problem isn't just the kids. It's the fucking parents and community leaders who need to step up and do something. Activities with kids, after school reading programs etc. It's not the government's job to make these people stop killing each other. And yes, while Arne Duncan was an excellent administrator of Chicago schools, I'm sure he has more important things to do right now...

Isolated incident? News like this come from the states daily. There is more violence in those schools like in the rest of the world combined.

Albert was approached by Eric Carson and another unknown person, both members of the "The Ville" faction, Simonton said. Carson struck Albert in the head with a piece of a wooden railroad tie, and the second person punched him in the face, Simonton said.

lbert was knocked unconscious by the blows for a short period, Simonton said, but gained consciousness and quickly tried to move from the escalating street fight.

"He gained consciousness and moved a few feet away, but as he was trying to get up, he was attacked by a second group," Simonton said.

That group, made up of five members from the opposing faction, then took their shots at Albert, Simonton said.

He was struck in the head by Riley with the piece of railroad tie, a rectangular piece of wood used as a base for railroad tracks, Simonton said.

Once Albert was on the ground again, Shannon was seen "stomping on his head repeatedly," Simonton said.

I get your point and I live in Europe so probably more than most here. However, it is just untrue that most schools in the States are overrun by violence. It just is not true. Now, when things go wrong they go rather spectacularly wrong.

Crazy fights happen in Milwaukee Public schools too. The bizarre part is once the fights start, calls are made to family members and before you know it there are 40 or more people throwing down.....most are adults from both sides. Instead of stopping the violence the adults escalate it. Very sad.

The only reason this got attention was because it was on video. Last year, something like 40 public school students were killed in a 35 day period and it didn't even get national news.

When 6 people were shot at pricey Northwestern University a while back, it was huge news, the Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox both wore little Northwestern patches on their uniforms in sign of support.

When society ignores a problem, it just gets worse. Then everybody acts like they can't believe how things got so bad when it finally boils over.
