Swithing to Mac from PC - What do I need to know?

So I have ordered a Macbook Pro at the encouraging of coworkers and friends. My 1yo HP laptop with 4GB RAM takes about 15 minutes to fully reboot and load the programs. i've had enough.

The 24" LED Cinema display arrived today. The laptop should arrive early next week.

What do I need to know? Are there any good resources for lifetime PC users making the switch?

Yeah, I hear Adium is what I need instead of Trillian. I'm not really following, I'm just tired of the slow loading 1yo PC. I mean at 1yo with 4GB RAM it should not be loading this slow. I want a better solution to use my time more efficiently!

I didn't get the Growl update thingy.

What's cool about Macs is that you get the computer, turn it on and it's ready to use. No installing software after software.

Growl I think is just for custom notifications, you can remove it. I don't use it.

Because Adium keeps sending out these requests that I update my client to be compatible with theirs. Not going to happen (not even an option to be honest).

I have thinned out my ICQ list by about 50 people in the last week.

i switched 2 months ago and love it, never had touched an apple before

took a few days to get used to some keypad shortcut differences and the tricks you can do with the trackpad gestures. those are essential.

confused for a few days about the delete button, which is more like a backspace than the delete you are used to. ... fn+delete was a great find for me

for the first week i had mine i didnt like the mouse since i was so used to the 2 button PC mouse... then i realized you could go into your mouse settings and set the right side for "seconday" and then you can right click on things

discover the spotlight (magnifying glass in upper right corner) that thing is a godsend!

and yeah, adium rocks

i had a thread a while back with similar questions, and had some good response on various programs you may want to check out

Why is it that your ICQ is one of the few, on my list of well over 700, that almost always writes the same responses back to me twice?

[09:03] baddog: maybe he does not know that
[09:03] baddog: maybe he does not know that
[09:03] baddog: techs don't usually know details like that
[09:03] baddog: techs don't usually know details like that

And this is on my PC running Trillian, not on my Mac.

Maybe you should consider updating your client?

Sharky, I recently picked up a 15" Macbook Pro and I LOVE it.

For the first week I didn't like it. I'm used to PC's where it takes me a week to tweek things to get them the way they work right. Since the Mac was already a better platform, no tweeking was needed...It just worked and I didn't get that at first.

My 1 piece of advice is to use the Time Machine. I was visiting 3XTom a few months back when his Macbook locked up hard. He went to the store, bought a new one, and ran Time Machine. Had everything back up and running the same day.

time machine rocks! Simply plug in an external hard drive, and it'll backup your shit automatically. And it reminds you every 10 days or so to do a backup

You are not the first to mention this. I have a microsoft mouse with my PC that I was planning on using as well. any probs with that?

The Arc mouse looks pretty cool though. I might have to grab one of those.

time machine is definitely nice. When i got my apple i got a brand new external just to use for it, but for the first week i could never get it to run all the way, it would always lock up after about 10 minutes and say the disc was ejected... then i ran into this article on how to properly get set up, then it ran fast and perfect give it a read

enjoy

Forgot to add something constructive..

You'll definitely need VMware or Parallels so you can run some windows only software.

I have a Macbook pro, I like it to a certain extent, it is amazing tho how everybody recommends it saying how smoothly it runs but as soon as you buy one and have trouble people come out of the woodwork saying "actually this sometimes crashes, for this you need to do this and that, for that go to the support forum...."

because the invention of "point and click" or "cut and paste" was not revolutionary at all.

Xerox PARC invented the GUI. Apple borrowed some elements of it, and hired some PARC researchers.

Windows has "point and click" and "cut and paste" also

because windows doesn't have "point and click" or "cut and paste"?

Do I have to buy a Ford to join the industrial revolution?

You are correct sir. Jobs and Woz had the idea to actually put it into a personal computer, and thankfully Adobe put their support behind it. Gates used it in his software and now we have a choice a to what we use. The revolution is choice.

A friend just showed me DropBox. Have any of you heard of this service? seems like a pretty good way to share data between multiple computers or people?

I can find no reason to run a mac over windows 7. Hardware is way worse, software is the same or not on the Mac.

What windows only software????? Not that I'm saying it's not good to have, but come on - the only reason I've seen it "needed" was for testing different o/s platforms with new design/programming.

You can probably spend about 5 minutes cleaning up your startup and a few other things and save yourself the cost of a macbook.

The 24" LED Cinema display arrived today. The laptop should arrive early next week.

What do I need to know? Are there any good resources for lifetime PC users making the switch?
