Working in this in this industry isn't a 9-5...

If you are really looking to make money, so how do you guys keep from getting burnt out, I'm sure most went through it.

Need some suggestions i havent been able to find stable ground lately, long hours in front of the computer, i'm sure partying 4 times of the week doesn't help.

Like everything else, it comes down to trial and error. Eventually you'll learn how to manage your time.

make time to take time off every week, it's the hardest thing for me to do but when I do, I live in that moment and enjoy the things that I do whether it's rowing a boat on a lake or taking a road trip... turn off the phone, computer, disconnect and make believe like it's 1989 again. IF you let your job define who you are then you will get lost and burn out.

I guess i will set at least one day of the week away from the world, i guess there is too many things in the works in one way it's great but it has been taking a pretty big toll on my personal life, I mean the money is great but what's the point if you can't enjoy it. The turning the phone thing is a must but every time i do that i get a million msg's.

As said make a schedule and stick to it no matter what. Do not fall for that but I work better at night BS, few do.
Plan time away from the computer and technology, yes even email.

Take naps, small walks, whatever. Get normal amounts of sleep. Set an eating schedule and also stick to that. Do your best to eat at your desk as little as possible.

Sure you may or need to put in 40,60,80 hours a week. Often a well rested you, properly fed, and mentally alert will reduce the time you need to spend working.

Then of course treat it like a job. Explain to people it is a job. No drop by visits, etc. However if you are in a relationship and want to keep it. Do make time for him/her, though they should understand it is a job too and you do not go bug her/him at work.

Making a schedule is definately a good idea but what seems to work for me is working different hours. I may work for 8 hours straight, take a 3 hour break, come back to work for another 2 hours then off to bed. The next day may be an entire different schedule for me. It really doesn't matter when you get the work done...as long as you get it done within a timely manner. But the important thing is to make sure that you get everything done that needs to get done. What may work well for someone else may not work well for you but this way of working has always seemed to work fine for me.

Another important point is to not look at what you do as a "job" but rather something that you enjoy doing. I do get burnt out every now and then but when that happens, I take a walk or go to a movie or something. Doesn't take very long before I am itching to get back to work though.

if you mean hosting industry, then its definitely not 9-5 and if you wanna make big time then u cant afford to have a life, except seldom nights when its slow and you head to a club or party, but then you also can't sleep in like crazy the next day either. but it pays off if you do it right.

Thanks for all the feedback i will certainly consider setting a time frame between work and personal life, I guess living a crazy life style has taken a toll on my brain and everyone around me, i see that i have been less productive. But then again when you run your business and the direction of how much you stand to profit is in your hands it kinda gets hard to control a steady schedule but i will have to stick to one in the time being.

if you party 4 times a week you deserve to fail

And about this industry not being a 9-5 job?
That has nothing to do with this industry, its called self employment!

You want to be successful?
Have money?
Employees?
Good partners?

Get ready for 60-70+ hour weeks

i'll give some shitty advice, but it worked for me. work 100 hours a week, non-stop, for a decade. miss out on around a decade of life (form me that was my twenties), retire, and then do whatever it is you'd actually like to be doing.

Are you completely retired today or do you still have shares in old projects with other people running it?

Always wondered what you did back in the day.

My advice is, don't ever give up. Sometimes you'll feel like throwing all your shit out the window, DON'T! Keep at it, hard work pays off but don't expect anything from this business. You might fail 1000 times before you get it working, you just need to keep going until that 1000 time. I personaly do about 50 hours plus I have a fulltime job. Not much time for anything else atm but it will be worth it in the long run.

Prioritize your work - make sure you keep time for your self and family - but ya - this is not a 9 to 5 routine, figure most webmasters work 11am noon until 3am that's max. Once you get things going, then obviously you can shave some of it off, but a great deal is self motivation to realize this is a one man show and you need to make money. Keep the parties down to maybe Saturday night, but overall - it's not an easy life.
