Antione Walker clears $60-$65 million over 10 years and is now broke. Anyone want to bet he shoots himself? Honestly, what do these guys then do the rest of their lives?

This is from the article.

A few weeks ago I posted an article with with some staggering facts:

* 78% of ALL NFL players are in bankruptcy or facing severe financial problems within 2-3 years of retirement.

* 60% of ALL NBA players have the same problem within 5 years of retiring.

Black folks aren't the greatest with money. They seem to be good at getting it, not so good at keeping it.

black people in general tend to want to uplift their families and their communities when they get a windfall of money, hence the entourage and the houses & benzes for everyone mentality. it doesn't matter if they're a rapper/athlete/actor/webmaster or just some street nigga that picked 6 lucky lotto numbers on the right day, at least this guy made a attempt to bring his people with him to the top and i respect and credit him for that. so what if he "blew" the cash, its not like he can't make more. and by the way that was just some ignorant shit you just said but i just saw that you're canadian

Hey what does being Canadian have to do with it? We have black peeps in Canada too.

Btw I didn't mean any disrespect. I understand what you're saying, but does he have to own all those blinged out whips? Does he have own all those watches? Does he have to bring his whole crew with him every where he goes? I bet most these guys that are around him now will be no where to be seen if he ever goes completely broke and can't afford all these things any longer. If he wanted to help him family/community why doesn't he pay for his cousins college or open a Library in his old neighborhood etc. Things like this seem like better use of his money

It's pretty simple, when you're getting that much money and want it to last forever you either:

-Keep working for money (won't last forever)
-Conserve as much as possible (still won't last forever)
-Make your money work for you (possibly forever)

The only real option is to make the money work for you in the long run.. I don't understand how people that come into money like this can't understand that..

If you're making 10 million per year and spending over half of it what are you going to when the money stops coming in from manual labor? Did he never once ask himself that question? C'mon.

I can understand how he might get lured into the situation of helping everyone out because hell anyone that has any kind of way to get in touch with him is going to be asking for a loan and telling friends that they know him which just brings in more loaners..

Athletes aren't much different than people who win the lottery. Don't get me wrong Athletes bust their ass training, playing in the games, they are very talented. But they don't "make" money. Their physical abilities is what generates money for them. A person playing the lotto doesn't make money, he got lucky.

People who "make money" from saving, investing, starting their own business, making more money, expanding, etc etc etc... those people learn how to make money.

There is no business sense learned from playing football. Money gets tossed into their lap and most of them have never worked a day in their life much less do they know how to manage money, invest etc... Then you have all of the leaches who want handouts, scam them, and talk them into bad investments... Most of them were likely poor to start with so as soon as they get money the first thing they want to do is spend it so they can over compensaite for growing up poor.

first off, being Canadian doesn't excuse him of shit

secondly, what he said was an opinion, not racism. Considering all the black folks that came up on this continent came from slavery, minimal financial experience would definitely have an impact on the ability to save and invest and 'teach' other people, such as children and friends, the benefits of financial responsibility.

It's taken time to develop the racial infrastructure that allows more minorities into positions of making money, and i agree it was ignorant for him to ignore that little reality

You explained, supported and disagreed with the post you just quoted, as well as showing the exact attitude being discussed. Great job.

But no, what matters isn't race. What matters is being an idiot lacking education, common sense and a good upbringing.

Smart, educated black people will handle large amounts of money just fine, and most white trailer trash will lose it just as quickly as most ghetto guys will.

The problem here is the brain, not the skin

I think it's the NBA rules that forces them to sit in on these money management seminars specifically tailored for them with ex players speaking about their experiences. They make all rookies go through this no matter what team you are on.

It's really hard to to feel sorry for someone when they had that available to them and they still decided to buy multiple luxury cars, houses with indoor pools, and basketball courts. Upkeep isn't cheep.

Agreed

There are plenty of black athletes that are doing fine and there are white athletes that have trouble with money themselves. Some even are broke while they are still playing.

The more money you make the easier it is to spend large amounts, the more people you have trying to get money out of you and the harder it is to manage it all. Add into that the lack of financial smarts and bad decisions that just about everyone makes from time to time and its pretty easy to see how this happens to so many people so easily.

It can happen to anyone.
