Is the FBI capable of logging in to any site (Facebook for example) as any member?

Checking up the content, private messages, user details etc etc?

I've been spooked a little recently and am beginning to get a little paranoid.

only reason to be paranoid is if you are doing something illegal.

after this thread and how the FBI scans GFY you will be under investigation now.

I don't see why they would waste their time snooping on someones facebook account unless that person was under investigation. Why are you so spooked? As long as you have not been participating in illegal activity, there's really no reason to worry about it.

any site and facebook is 2 totally different questions.

the easy answer is no they cant login to ANY site

if i code a site with an ultra secure login that shuts off the account for a year after any failed attempts then nobody is getting in without the password period not even me.

Could the fbi call up any site owner and say "get me in to this account or you will be arrested , if you tell anyone you will be arrested" etc etc i'm sure they could get into pretty much any site

But its not such an easy task as you might think , there's logs to alter, tracks to erase etc if they want to do it undetected

I don't think they do it, unless they need to pretend that this account is online, using it as bait.. that's what I gather from CSI and other TV shows :D

Just to read messages etc, it doesn't make any sense. Just bully the administrator of the site to give you administrative access and read messages all day long

As I suspected Smokey.

I'm doing nothing illegal. The social network site I run is totally legit, and we're not liable for anything members get up to regardless, they sign up and agree to our terms and conditions, which is in effect a contract.

Warrant? That is so 1990's. Thanks to the "Patriot Act" they don't need shit all, much less probable cause, to do what they want now.

The problem is that there are potential vulnerabilities on many levels. Assuming an organization has physical access to your computer (while you're at work, etc) they can track pretty much anything you do.

For full security, you need to work in a sound-proofed faraday cage without windows that only you have access to, use a custom, highly secure OS, use strong custom encryption on all connections, and preferably only connect to trusted others within a private darknet.

I suppose you could go a long way simply with modest means and a bit of time, though:
- locked room that doubles as faraday cage
- OpenBSD with a minimum of services
- freenet over TOR
- only use PGP-encoded messages
- hidden OS on an epoxy-encased portable flash drive
...and some other things

You could probably keep the NSA busy for a few weeks if you tried hard. Of course, they'd just attack the weak point: other people.

Post 9/11 the fbi can get into anything by just remotely dropping the word “terrorism” while trying to get the warrant.

It can be something like "this person made a hatred post that has us concerned that he is in the final stages of planning a domestic terrorism attack" , the agents know what judges are easy and what are hard and they know where to go for what. It can also be as simple as “at 2am John Doe was seen in KFC handing a brown paper bag to a convicted felon who served time in Sing Sing Correctional Facility (A Supermax prison) and was close friends with Ayman AlKaleb a known Al Queda Operative”. And trust me noone from Facebook will notify you that the fbi was given your info.

here is the good news, there are approx:

15,000 FBI Special Agents
250,000,000 people over the age of 18 in the USA

Unless you are up to something fucked up I wouldn’t worry at all, it always gets me when grandma gets very paranoid that someone is tapping her phone, its like what the fuck is she talking about some pasta recipes?

On another note there are many other ways regular people can get your facebook login info, even if your password is &0R_+Fg^%f , I think a good social engineer is more dangerous then a expert hacker.

The US government (not sure if it's FBI or another branch) at one point installed foot-diameter internet cables leading to a central hub where the record and process all information that goes through at least 5 of the major internet hubs - so they get all information.

All you need to know is that the internet is considered Public, not Private in the eyes of the US law, right? There is no such thing as actual private messaging, private email, private boards and such.

No they can't and they won't. If they suspected you are a terrorist they could subpoena your accounts details. If they have absolutely no reason to look into you they will not.

If you aren't doing any Federal crimes or anything across state lines (if you are on Facebook, chances are you are crossing state lines) they have no jurisdiction and won't bother with you.

The main point you should ask yourself is, am I really that big of a deal? Because the FBI won't even waste their time if they are not going to bust up a "ring" of criminals. I have worked with them in one of my jobs and more often then not they turned down what was offered them by my employers because it was too small pickens for them to lift a finger.

They don't like to waste tax payers dollars. Or more to the point, appear to be...

Most sites are pretty easy to hack, and almost all of the big ones are susceptible
to a simple brute force attack, so any reasonably competent cracker can get into
your Facebook. Aside from cracking Facebook itself, "social engineering" attacks
such as sending you a personalized phish will normally work. I personally used another
technique on myspace the other day as part of an investigation. I sent the target a
myspace message containing certain HTML and IE security holes did the rest. So
a competent cracker has at least three different categories of methods they can use,
each of which will work at least half the time.

Note I said that any reasonably competent cracker can do it. Do not assume that any
government employee is reasonably competent. Occasionally a government employee
will at least be competent enough to bring in a private person who knows their shit.
Law enforcement has called us twice. Remember, though, this is the intelligence level
of the most important government official in the world :
Quote:
The economy sucks and people are hurting financially. My solution - I'll saddle each
taxpayer with another $3,000 of debt and give that 5.2 billion dollars to ACORN,
my former employer who has repeatedly been convicted of criminal activity.
That's our #1 guy, the top of the heap. I don't figure his underlings are any brighter.

omg shut up..I had a friend that wouldn't join for years because he didn't want the cia to have his information. I asked why he thought the CIA didn't already know his birthday and haven't already seen the photos of him in silly hats.

Brad - I agree with you on this. The government is watching U.S. citizens all across the Internet from IMs to tracking which websites are viewed and by who - as well as who we send emails to (at least on services like hotmail, gmail, etc.).

Keep in mind -- a lot of companies are working closely with the government so they remain compliant with federal laws and are not shut down for any reason. Look @ Google - tell me they do not have a tight relationship and you will be laughed at.

I'm not concerned about anything on my computer.

I suppose it goes without saying they are able to get into my dedicated server if they really wanted to, and go through every file on there?

I think what happened is a banned member created 3 or 4 accounts, went into our live chat, made up a bunch of shiz, took screen shots, and sent them over as supposed "proof" of something.

Ok, time to put the tin hat away.

It's funny, there's about 3 people in this thread who actually understand what I'm asking, and have given intelligent replies. Thanks to those.
