its great if you are coming from vista.

decent, but still uses more resources if you are moving from XP, even with all the sevices and fluff tweaked down.

I have installed 7 but I haven't had a ton of time to play with it as I got busy and have mainly got work done on my mac. What are some of the key tweaks for 7?

windows 7 is a true rocking upgrade from MSFT. Ran it since the beta without any hiccups, went to the RC candidate with no problems and then the full version. no glitches or issues. Huge improvement

i'm not sure there is a point in upgrading to ultimate at this time.. are there any other benefits of getting ultimate than cheaper edition besides those that are listed in MS' version comparison chart?

only thing i needed from vista ultimate was remote desktop connection - if thats built-in in cheaper versions in 7 i'm sure i can live without the ultimate package

yeah, I got a few copies for the office. The funny thing is I really wanted to use the XP mode on my Dell laptop and it turns out it isn't compatible. I don't have the Virtualization Techonology, lol.
At least the computers are running well now...

I still have XP pro on my main computer.. I already have everything setup to work efficiently, so I'm not gonna start messing with my computer that keeps my biz going.

I used Windows 7 ultimate on a friend's PC and thought it was awesome though. I'm thinking of building a new PC and without a doubt it will have Win 7 ultimate.

I was using XP Home on my old Athlon 2600 /2GB Ram up until a few days ago when I upgraded to Windows 7. I have to say M$ have done a great job with this OS and it's definitely worth the pain of upgrading.

It's reinvigorating my aging PC and it's now a pleasure to use again!!

overall it's really nice but there are things I don't like. The TurnOff/Restart Button with the little arrow beside. Sometimes I hit the false side of the button. The alt-tab navigation was also better in XP in my oppinion. Anyway it's better than vista .

XP was great. But unfortunately Adobe didn't support it for 64 bit stuff. So when I went to Vista it was purely to get the power of all 16 gigs of ram I have in my machine to work with Photoshop and Premiere. And Windows 7 works a LOT better than Vista.

It's worth the upgrade just to get away from the quirky networking of Vista alone. Nothing more frustrating than having to tune your network card down to 100 MB HALF because Vista would just randomly disconnect you if you tried to run it full blast.

Now I run my network card at 1 GB FULL and I get twice the internet speeds.

Machine now boots up twice as fast too.

XP was awesome for the last 8 years, and I woulda stayed with it too...but I do a lot of intense stuff on my machine and need the full power of it. And if software companies are moving forward then so do I.

Now if all I had to do was surf GFY like some of the "players" on here...then I might stick with XP for forever. lol

Ubuntu.... boots faster, shuts down faster, will run longer, is more stable, almost no virus/spyware issues, and has more kick ass developed FREE software at your finger tips than Windows could ever dream of.

Oh, and it's free online or $25 in your local store, with free updates.

Use it for my backup machine here. Totally useless for the video and graphics stuff I do though. And probably not a pretty enough GUI for the average user.

Moved from XPpro to 7pro, love it, didn't even need any driver CDs, it found everything online in a matter of seconds.. The only change I made was to apply the old win2k look skin, I don't like the blurry-transparent window edges etc

Totally useless or you haven't learned what to do? Speed/performance wise, it's the Computer, then the software and Ubuntu is much faster than Windows.

Graphic creation wise, if you use Photoshop, Gimp is it's twin brother. Video wise, you just need to learn the software, it's more on par with a Mac with about 10,000 more 'free' software additions you can try.

As for pretty GUI, you can make it look like windows, other os's, totally unique, customize it yourself. It's not limited.

Windows is playing catch up to Linux.. not the other way around. Other than in the game department, which is closing the gap quickly.

Would be no good for me. I have CS4 Photoshop and CS4 Premiere Pro. Both tweaked up with batches and settings that I've worked on for years. So moving all of that over to a Linux machine with new software would be utltra time consuming...and I'm not sure that Gimp would do the trick for me replacing Photoshop...and since I'm a Premiere guy with video it would be a huge leap to try and move to another video editing software.

I can't see why anyone would run anything other than 64bit these days. I've been using 64 exclusively for 2 years, and it hasn't shut me out of anything in the software world. The only things its done is allow me to run more ram and have faster graphics programs, especially 3D stuff.

My laptop came with 64 bit Win 7, and I think that'll be the case for a lot of new systmes that are shipping. Now's the time for 64, don't be afraid of it.

No need to: "", since you are far from being alone in sticking with XP and Microsoft clearly knows about this and took it in consideration

Uncalled for, plus most people doing what you said where the first ones to jump into the Vista bandwagon...

(like you did... )
No, I stuck with XP until Nov. of last year. But then I bought a new machine to better handle the intense video work I do on it. Which meant 64 bit and 16 gigs of RAM. XP 64 bit isn't supported by Photoshop 64 bit or the different architecture they have on Premiere CS4 (they are moving CS5 to all 64 bit in a couple of months...and no XP won't be supported).

So if I wanted to be able to have a good workflow and fast rendering I needed to tap into my computers speed and power. XP 64 bit couldn't. So I ended up on Vista and hated it (no bandwagon jumping here). Windows 7 so far has none of the little quirks and annoyances that Vista had. And frankly if Vista had been as good as it was supposed to be I wouldn't have left it either. But I couldn't WAIT for Win 7 to finally come out so I could get rid of Vista and still have my Adobe stuff work with 64 bits.

It works better out of the box than XP did in the beginning too. (remember what xp was like before SP2?)

Not joining in the Mac vs. Windows vs. Linux fight, but Win 7 seems to be the most user friendly, fastest, and most stable os I've ever used.

Me (have Win7 64bit installed on one my desktops). It's a same Vista - believe me. My be a little bit improved, but that "little bit" even not enough to call it Vista SP3. It's still a very raw operating system.

Rule of thumb, NEVER install anything microsoft until its 2 years old!
In Vistas case it barely got to that age so if people had stuck to the (Microsoft rule) no one would have ever had a problem lol

"or much of a problem anyways"

Have you ever actually used Gimp? It's photoshop on superman crack. All your photo editor plugins, all the shit CS does, can be done in Gimp - and it's faster. And if Gimp can't do it, another tool can, that will be 1000's of times faster than PS.

Video editing wise... Linux is the #1 OS used in Hollywood. Used by Pixar and Dreamworks, and almost every other studio. South park uses Linux backend with Mac desktops. The secretaries personal desktop linux machine could be used as part of the render cluster, making every machine in the office, part of the render pie.

I bet you can find Video Editing software that looks almost like Premiere, or a skin that will change one over.

If you're using windows, your spending twice the time to do the same work as someone else and probably spending 100% more the money.
