Battery lifetime on laptops??

I'm getting really tired of my limited battery lifetime on my laptop and was wondering what's good on the market these days if I would replace my laptop one with a long battery life.

I'm looking for minimum 5 hours + the option to install a second battery as well, the Quad cores looks nice but not sure if they are worth the $ in terms of extra power. I prefer a light laptop with a screen smaller or about 15"

Any suggestions ? I checked the Envy15 from HP and it looked really sweet but 2500 seems to be a bit in the higher end considering I'm replacing my laptop every 6-10 months and not doing any kind of gaming on it

The laptops I have had let you toggle between the settings to extend battery life. There should be some kind of power management built in typically. It can't say it has extended it 8 hours, but it does help some.

Good luck chief.

8 hours, 8-10, huh yea right, what laptop you have running on a single battery that last that long, not including crappy macs. Don't know how long they last, the best laptop battery life right now comes from LG r590 er 80 er something (they may have a new one, and thats at about 3 1/2 hours, don't know what these other guys are talking about but am dying to find out, what last 8 hours while doing work and not 8 hours of sleep mode???
When you look for battery life the the laptop with the most milliamps and NOT the most CELLS, more cells are better but only if the milliamps are up there as well.

"If" they last 8-10 they are probably slow running celerons, and don't run good for shit. but i would love to know....

I'm also seeing most say "up to 3-4 hours" and then they will last for up to 2 hours with actual usage, and after a few months not even that

HP got the Envy15 that seems to have long battery life time and Sony got the Z series that promise 7+ hours. So looking to see if anyone got any useful feedback in here

I get about 4 of actual usage, maybe a little more if no Internet connection on. I suspect the SSHD helps in that regard.

I get at least 2.5 hours if I have my laptop on high performance. If I have it on power saver mode I get 4 to almost 5 hours out of mine.

I typically use the cord though I do unplug every so often. I will be looking into getting a external battery of some type soon. More than likely with my next upgrade order. My laptop peeve is how hot assorted ones get. My next one besides battery life must remain fairly cool on the bottom before adding another fan to it.

my macbook is 2 or 3 years old and I still get at least 3 hours out of the battery.

My asus 1005ha netbook claims 8 hours of battery life and I actually get about 6 or 7 out of it depending on what I do.

with SSHD do you mean the Solid State disks? I do have a laptop with a 128 GB SSD, might be worth hooking it up again and see how it works.

I was told that after a bit of usage it would start freezing up since it can't READ and WRITE at the same time, is that an evil rumor ?

I was considering a Mac because of their stability and the batter life time, but I simply can't use a computer where I cant write my own commands, then I'd rather use Linux.

The Asus might be worth checking out, that's a long lasting battery

That is what I have and I have had it for a little over a year now. I think you have a pretty good idea of how much use my laptop gets and the amount of traveling it does (so you know it gets shaken up a fair amount). I have never had a problem with the drive.

goodgirl has one as well and her only problem was filling it up. Had to get external for storing the pics.

I am extremely happy with the decision to spend the extra money. If you already own one you really should be using it. You are going to slap yourself.

The older your laptop gets the shorter life span you get on battery.

It seems old bateries just get tired.

5+ hours? are you guys sure? I've had quite a few laptops over the years, even with performance throttled down a bit none of them lasted for any longer than 3 hours...

My Dell Mini10v gets awesome battery life, however, I wouldn't consider it a laptop, as it's a netbook.

I guess it depends on what the OP wants: A laptop, or a netbook.

Yes, I compared the battery life on my macbook and my netbook.

Someone else asked about the netbook and I replied to that.

the only way to get decent performance out of a laptop and long batter life is to use a SSD for the hard drive because it uses very little power and one of the ultra low power intel cpu's.

Another main thing that kills the battery's is using the laptop with it plugged in all the time and not actually using the battery by itself. This will KILL the battery faster, its best to fully charge it then fully drain it to keep it at peek performance. If you are like me and like the performance better when plugged in TAKE THE BATTERY OUT, just don't pull the plug

Doing it this way a battery can easily last up to 3/4 years and still hold a charge as good as day one.

I've never used any of my laptops on a battery long enough to check that out. I deliberately let the battery die once in a while and recharge it to full, but not when using.

When your ready to upgrade the latest Intel's run about a third less energy which helps a lot. The problem is the screen uses about 70% of the total power. Maybe try to turn down the brightness or get an after market battery off eBay that is better.

HP claiming they made one with 10 hours battery time. Not sure if it actually delivers.

Also checkout this extra battery for HP Mini http://laptopcom.blogspot.com/2009/0...n-battery.html

I need something in between that, the Mini's I cant actually work from and the 17" I can't carry

13-15" inch screen is perfect for me

Thanks for the tip, the x200s is probably going to be my next laptop, one thing that makes me hesitate is that their 12.1 WXGA+ appears to be out of stock and may delay the order for more than 4 weeks

You sure it wasn't plugged in?
Otherwise, I'm calling bullshit.
Would love to see what laptop pulled 8 hours of continued use, though.

I have the asus notebook and it is about 8 hours. I have 3 laptops and completely gave up on bringing my larger laptops when I am away. The asus does everything I need, fits into a purse, has the full keyboard with all the keys in the right place and has everything I need.

My laptop battery was recalled a long time ago. But I figure I'll use it anyway until it poops out on me and then I'll return it for the recall and get a brand new one.

They over heated or something, but my Toshiba can detect it early and shut the computer down. Sony and Mac couldn't do that (no idea if they can yet), so they did the recall.

For those of you in disbelief of 5+ hour times:

They are called 12 cell batteries and will also improve air circulation under the laptop.

Google it

the sony vaio i bought last year gets 2 if im lucky. less if i am doing a lot of stuff on it. if i have an internet stick hooked up, it only gets 1. it really sucks.

Did I show you the laptop I bought when I was in Florida in August? Picked up an Acer Timeline for $550... Single core, but advertises 8 hour battery life.

I installed Linux which means I don't have a lot of the power saving features, and still get over 5 hours from it, even when watching movies and stuff.
