Moving Websites DNS Question ref: Downtime

Okay question.

Say I have Host A that I am currently on, and I am about to have my sites moved to host X. I want minimal downtime, obviously. So what I am wondering is... if I go to the registrars where I bought my domains from and ONLY ADD the new nameservers... then let that propagate for 24-48 hrs before I transfer hosts, once I get everything transferred and delete Host A's nameservers from my domains, I should have very minimal downtime, correct?

IE RIght now this is what I would have for nameservers:
ns1.hostA.com
ns2.hostA.com

then I would add the new NS's:
ns1.hostA.com
ns2.hostA.com
dns1.hostX.com
dns2.hostX.com

Then let it sit for 48 hours, then do the transfer and then remove the ns1.hostA.com and ns2.hostA.com from the domains.

Hopefully that wasnt too confusing.

your registrars dns changeover should be nearly instant, but that doesn't mean it will be instant for all of your surfers, that depends on their networks.... some will be instant, some will take a day

Okay, thats why I was asking if I should add the new host's nameservers as #3 and #4 and leave it like that for 48 hrs for it to fully propagate worldwide

Thanks for the lightning fast replies, I appreciate that!

what I do for site moves, is take a backup of old site a, set it up on new site B, then change the dns, leaving the content on both hosts, then in a week, remove the content from from the old host.

No, you should just have the new ones.

ISP that update their caches fast will direct to Host X.
Those who serves from cache will direct to A because they cached the ns. Eventually and progressively, those ISP will update to send to new nsX, so new site.

OK awesome. Alrighty let's play a game. First person who gives me their referral thing for certified hosting, gets whatever commission I give you because I have to have somehting in the "who referred you" box.

Go!

Also... whoever gets it, keep the little guy in mind! (I need work!!!!!!!!!!!)

Switch to techiemedia.net tube2k and I will skip the commission for that other host.
Check the specials they posted this or last week. The thanks giving back thread.

They will help you make the switch flawlessly and even do it for you if you like.
Not really a hijack post either. You just said to keep the little guy in mind.

If you can modify the DNS info on the server you could always reduce the TTL which should help a little.

Otherwise, yeah have your site one both servers. Downtime should be minimal if at all.
