Video games is where the money is.

I just read that the new video game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 broke all sales records. It was released earlier this week on Tuesday and one day sales in the US and UK were 310 million.

That is impressive!

I wonder how much revenue World of Warcraft still brings in to Blizzard every month?

The last numbers I heard is that they have around 5 million active members world wide. At their height they had about 8-9 million, but that has dropped off some (but will probably go back up when the next expansion comes out). Even if the average player is only paying $10 a month that is a ton of cash.

They are running 11 million per month, and growing consistently still. And its 15 bucks a month. Simple math will show what kind of killing they are pulling from that game. A 50/50 aff program would make a lot of people rich..lol

As of Aug 8th/20009 they were at 11.5 million members. (yeah, all recur)

Next expansion is due out in a few months, will probably bring them up to 13+.

I know blizzard got temp. suspended once again in China. Figure they will have that fixed again quickly. They are spreading in that country like wildfire which makes kinda go hmm. The demographics just do not seem to make sense. I mean how many Chinese do you really think could afford it, unless they have chinese price to play.

Video games is only going to expand. The demographics, the population explosion, its all going up hill there right now. Zynga who creates games for Facebook and Myspace started around 2 years ago, they are set to do 100 million this year.

on the first mission of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - you need to kill the civil people at the Russian airport Sheremetevo or some other. I think it's not ok!

EA sports, that makes most of the games laid off 50% of its staff yesterday about 1500 people.
They are getting hurt too.

There always has to be some people killed in Army type games to keep some realism.

Companies that are cashing in still lay people off. Microsoft laid a bunch of people off as well. It is about downsizing to save and make even more money, especially for stockholders.

Fact is people (workers) have shown they will put up with it and increase their production without extra pay. More and more people are willing to put in free overtime, work on shit from home, come in on days off, you name it. Think the last report showed production was up almost 7% and pay was down for those same workers almost 6%. You can check the department of labor I think for actual stats.

We work to hard in this country, or some of us do.

You were right. Sorry about doubting you. My bad, I double checked and did some research.
Only Sony seems up. I thought they also included EA in that report.

I do not like posting wrong information when I am quoting someone, well at any time but especially when quoting another person.

WoW makes a decent amount of money; I believe it made Vervendi $1.2 billion in 2007

EA is suffering due to their constant acquisitions, their exclusive NFL license purchase, and constant yearly releases of certain properties. Take NFS's yearly releases. It seems to have hurt the series more than helped it. NFS:Shift didn't do as well as expected, and now they're taking NFS off the yearly release schedule and handing it to the Criterion Games (Burnout) division to develop the next in the series.

Its not the first mission; and is skippable. Besides, its nothing more than 1's and 0's broken down, so really, get a grip. There's much worse things happenning in real life and in movies that make this look pale in comparasin.

oddly enough the gaming demographic is pretty old and graying.

will the gaming market expand forever? like all alleged inevitabilities, probably not.

Oh wah, it's a VIDEO GAME! If you don't like it, don't play it. Easy as that. Games are meant to take you away from reality for a bit. A break away from the real world.

Marc De of ARS went to the video game genre a LONG time ago.. I've heard that his engine was licensed out to a few different manufacturers..

Pretty smart move to diversify if you know you can make a winning product.

My younger brother made some decent money writing reviews for some video games over the summer. I would do it too but I don't have an interest in video games.
