american football facts for the ignorant blokes across the pond

2 things you always hear from brits who are not educated about american football-

1. why is it called football when they don't kick the ball, use their feet, etc.

2. why do those sissies wear all that protective gear.

facts:

1. the highest scoring players in football are the kickers. In fact, the top scoring position in the history of football is the kicker- by far. Moreover, the game is started with a kickoff, whenever a touchdown is scored a kick adds an extra point and each change of possession involves kicking the ball to the other team.

2. The highest numbers of sport-related injures are reported for basketball (409,799), football (376,115) and bicycling (317,041)

Where does soccer rank? Even though soccer players wear virtual no protection, soccer is ranked 14th of the 15 most-injury prone sports.

cheerleaders suffer more injuries than soccer players.

a) Don't nick my bait for trolling. Come up with your own.

b) It won't work reversed, because none of us really care in the way Americans care. That funny little fucker I was baiting on my thread? Man he REALLY cared so passionately. British people just go meh.

c) Ideas you could try:

Islam/BNP/immigration/racism in Britain
All British girls are ugly
British people all have bad teeth

Good luck. I will be watching your progress and marking you accordingly at the end of the week.

Actually, I'm pretty sure if you add-in the number of injuries caused by soccer hooligans, that soccer would be #1 in terms of injuries on and off the field...

you are quite right.

when i was living in san francisco, a gay brit cut my hair once at a very nice salon. he told me the hooligans used to throw darts at each other across the field.

I admit I was one of those people who asked those type of questions about American Footbal. I started watching a few games when I lived in Canada for 6 months and I got into it a little. Its just too slow for me tho in all honesty. So much stopping and starting.

Football (soccer) is fast, free flowing and full of twists and turns. I've grown up with it so I'm pretty sure thats why I love it, same as an American my age will tell me NFL is the greatest.

Its two different sports, and there is room for both. For me nothing will beat watching Football (Soccer) in the bar/pub with you friends having a few beers.

Here's the thing, your biggest sporting event of the year is the superbowl, yet after the match most of the talk is about the 1/2 time show and the fucking adverts on telly.

If you asked any person what adverts were on during 1/2 time of the world cup final, they wouldn't know because they're either weeing *ladies* or getting the beers in for the second half.

You move a team from 1 city to another because someone bought the franchise and moved it, if you attempted that in the U.K there would be a riot. the team is so ingrained in the area.

Wimbledon a team with no stadium did this about 15 years, they still have never been forgiven by their old fans who set up a rival team and have had to get promoted through around 6 leagues to get to the lowest league level.

And when people say why the pads. they're looking at rugby and Aussie rules not football.

How can less injuries happen globally than in America?

The main points are:

1. Footballers are pussies compared to American Footballers, and American Footballers are Pussies compared to Rugby players. Thats why we take the piss out of them idiots wearing body armour.

2. Football means using your feet! nobody cares if the american footballers kick the ball every now and then, thats not football.

3. I watch the odd American Football match and like others have said, it can be extremely boring compared to watching a game of Football.

4. Your not "educating" anyone, thats the way it is.

I did try and explain earlier. The odd behaviour Americans exhibit when anyone DARES to challenge their padded version of Rugby just isn't exhibited in England.

Try one of the other trolling topics I suggested.

it's from Forbes: http://www.forbes.com/2006/11/15/spo...gersports.html

"Injuries are a part of sport," says Champ L. Baker, an orthopedic surgeon at the Hughston Clinic in Columbus, Ga., who is president of the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine.

Shame you don't know your history then, the battle of Britain was over by Nov 1940 when Hitler knew he couldn't invade Britain as his navy had been mostly destroyed, so he turned his attention on Russia.

America didn't enter the war until after that. It was the French asses you saved not the British.

You can't call us ignorant, when it's YOU guys who kick up hell when we call our 'football', football, and not soccer.

Football was invented in England, and is known in every other country in the world as football.

Yet because Americans decided to call it soccer, they try and correct people who still call it football.

That sir, is ignorant...

Actually, football is because the sport is played on a field, on foot, and involves a ball being put in a "goal area", Rugby, American Football, Soccer, whatever, is all forms of football.

I'm American, I love American football, I tried watching soccer, but never got used to it.

You stupid fucking brits need to stop with the "we don't wear pads because we're not sissies" bullshit.

And us stupid fucking rednecks need to realize that soccer is a widely recognized sport.

Argument over, now shut the fuck up, because it's about as retarded as watching a handicapped person lick a window.

P.S. American Football hits way harder than any other sport, Soccer, or Rugby, that is why we wear pads.

Did you mean to say "WHY american football is even called football"?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_football#History
Primitive forms of rugby, then all covered by the name "football", were being played in the USA as far back as the 1840s, at Harvard, Yale and Princeton, stemming partly from Americans who had been educated in English schools.[8] The history of American football can be traced to early versions of rugby football and association football (called soccer in the United States). Both games have their origins in varieties of football played in the United Kingdom in the mid-19th century, in which a ball is kicked at a goal and/or run over a line.

Maybe so, but that still doesn't excuse some Americans getting pissed when someone else does call it football.

Whether you were first or not is irrelevant...

i agree. we all need to be tolerant of other's idea of football. we can do that by learning, thus this thread to help the british understand a couple key american football points they were obviously lacking in understanding.

In Canada we play both sports. We call the one soccer in order to avoid confusion.

No sense calling both sports by the same name.

As a completely random point of interest, the one NFL game played in Britain annually in recent years is thus far sold out months ahead of time in a matter of HOURS to the tune of 80k tickets sold.

There are obviously a few Brits who don't really give a shit about why it's called "football", they seem to like it anyway.

Hey, i'm actually a fan of the NFL too. I don't give a shit about why it's called football, i just laugh when people on here start the same debate which crops up every few weeks.

I watch a lot of NFL games over here, and have some late nights in doing so since some games don't start here till the early hours of the morning. Hell i even watch some baseball too...

all signs show that an nfl franchise could easily be supported there.

Why not just ask the rugby player to run in to a wall?

Here's the difference between a rugby player and an pro footballer. The largest rugby players are are nearly 242lbs. By comparison Jonathan Ogden is 6'9" and weights about 345lbs. Aaron Gibson played at 6' 6" and 410lbs.

For their size these men are extremely agile and enormously strong. They flatten 250lbs opponents on a regular basis. Any rugby player crazy enough to take one of these guys on had better be wearing a helmet or he might just get his head flattened.

On a final note, I've played both sports. Both are tough on the body. I chose football (American) because I like my teeth in my head.

Because 1 game per year is sold out on a regular basis? I highly doubt that. How many games are there in a regular season? I think you find a lot of the people going to that 1 game is US Citizens living in the UK. Yes Uk people go to it, if I had the time I would go too just to say I been to a game.

Don't confuse 1 game per year sold out with a franchise surviving and doing well.
