Mac people - How do you...

I'm making the transition from a PC to Mac. I just got a mac book pro and until I learn some new mac software, I need to install Parallels (I believe this is what it's called) to run some PC programs.

I have a few questions to those who do this:

1) Can you work on the PC site, save a file to a drive, then re-open on the mac side? Or do you have to partition the drive and each OS uses a part?

2) If on the PC side, is it still powerful enough to render SD video? I assume it is not as powerful when used as a PC, but can you work with non HD files?

Thanks.

yeah install parallels and the tools and you can trade files back/forth between the 2 OS's in real time.

Not sure about the rendering... but when you set it up you can specify the amount of ram/cpu/etc is available to parallels

why would you render video in parallels when you can do it right on the mac?

Why get a mac?

j/k. I just had to throw that out there. I'm sure Les will be more pleased with his mac than any other computer he ever had, especially since he wants to run windows on it for convenience.

Les - just bumping thread for ya.

What program(s) do you believe you need parallels for?

We converted every computer over to Mac's , what we found is we only needed parallels on one computer and that was simply for our accounting firm ( the did not have a Mac version of their internal software )

For everything else we found Mac programs that were equivalent and ultimately easier .. sometimes much better than anything we used to use on the PC's.

Like Danza said .. force yourself .. you'll be better off

When I first got my mac(in August) I added VM Ware Fusion(?), same thing as Paralells then I never used it after the first week. There isn't anything I could do on a PC that I can't do better/faster on my mac.

Force yourself to use just mac programs and set up sharing to pull stuff off the PC if you need to, you will get used to it and you will NEVER go back.

No, that's like, from the FUTURE DUUUUDE!!!!

Of course you can. You use an app that comes with the OS called Disk Utility.

Sorry, can't answer your questions because I've never had a need to partition and run any type of windows program; but, as a MAC fan and seeing you are new to it I have a program you will love! Quicksilver!! Program is so simple, yet so powerful. By far my favorite MAC program.

Here is a brief video tutorial on it and this guy has many many more. It takes a little while to get use to it, but once you do you'll be so happy you did!

I have some work I want to get done right away and I'm not ready to sit down to learn FCP just yet. I want to edit quickly on Vegas Video, render down to a AVI, then change over and use Turbo264 to make the h.264 video from the avi.

I'll learn FCP as soon as I get time. I have no desire to change back and forth all the time. But, until that happens, I need to work and this is the fastest way I see to do it.

How much ram/cpu should I set aside for running XP?

dood FCP is so easy

I bet you 10 bucks you could (if you tried) edit up on fcp really fast and render it to 264 in less time than you could on vegas.. specally if you know vegas.. fcp will be easy... seriously.. don;t over think it

and just think of how much better quality you will have in less time

how much you think your loosing going to shitty avi then from avi to something else?

The only thing I use parallels for is Quickbooks because all our QB files are from a pc and it would be a pain in the ass to convert them over to work on the quickbooks mac version. oh and decrypt dvd also however there is plenty of mac software that will do it however I am familiar with dvd descriptor.

I haven't found a Mac equivalent for VideoCharge which is pc only. I use it to cut full mp4s wmvs, flvs into clips by duration, # of clips... I know that if you google, there are a slew of programs that claim to do this on the mac but none of them work. Am I missing something?

Obviously when you're running Windows under Parallels the Windows part won't have all available system resources. Most of the time that won't be an issue. But let's say you're wanting to play a game that is available in PC only, and needs a lot of "juice"... for moments like this, I have Windows running under both parallels and also available as an option to start with using Bootcamp. Harddrives are so big now that there's plenty of space to set things up this way. On my Mac I can start in a Windows OS and have all resources available. Macs make great Windows machines.

I don't follow you.

Do you mean you never actually use the mac side and dedicate all the resources to the PC OS?
