Too FAT to graduate college?
I don't know about you but this strikes me as almost as ludicrous as the Ugandan pending bill outlawing gays with HIV. Damn.
http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/11/30...ght/index.html Students at Lincoln University with a body mass index of 30 or above, reflective of obesity, must take a fitness course that meets three hours per week. Those who are assigned to the class but do not complete it cannot graduate. |

IMO its a good idea. A lot of people have no idea of portion control, they just keep eating until they cant eat no more.
however, i think the BMI scale is a bit fucked. personally for me, when i was "crack head" skinny I still had a BMI of 24 which is considered "normal" but only a few pounds away from "overweight" for me to be in the "normal" range I would have to weigh 150lbs to 190lbs which being 6'2" in nearly impossible if i wanted any muscle mass. when i was playing sports in college and lifting a lot, i was in really good shape with less than 8% body fat, but still had a BMI of "overweight"

imo the college has no right to force them to be "fit" as it has no bearing on the persons potential or intelligence. I've known some god damn fat people that were mental giants and some skinny "fit" people that argue with a rock about what purple tastes like...

Heh, on one hand there are these "be fit, live longer" and " healthy mind in healthy body" ideas. Sure you have to do SOME sports to keep it all under control.
But Forcing kids to lose weight to graduate? They look bad in the year-book or what ![]() |

When I pay a school to keep me physically fit this rule will be a good thing... Until then I'm only paying them to educate me

![]() It sounds like something that should be implemented everywhere.
Obesity is a real problem in America. A crisis level problem.

if it's put in place, it needs to happen for only new students coming in NOT for current students. It's fucked up to say "hey there, you're graduating in 2 months but you need to lose 60lbs before you'll be able to"

Idiotic and ineffective.
If you want to fight obesity, you have to start before people are adults and focus on sustained learning rather than a single course. So that would involve implementing a program throughout high school and middle school, rather than forcing a useless course on college students. That would also have the benefit of actually reaching the right group. Because, as well all know, the people with the highest chance of being obese (as well as smoking, for that matter) are those without higher education. But aside from being ineffective and idiotic, this measure also suffers from another problem: it ignores the fact that these students are adults, and are thus supposed to exercise personal freedom and responsibility - especially when it comes to their own bodies.

I have over a 30 BMI.
I'm a lot healthier than a lot of people who are 'under' 25. BMI is a shit system of measuring obesity. |

I'd say they only have to take the extra class to graduate, not actually get their BMI below 30...

Being out of shape has a bigger impact on health spending than any other medical problem. Not to mention the fact that it's really unhealthy for people long term. It is not ok to be fat. College is the last stage before true adulthood and certain life habits are taught in it. This is just another one.

Did any of you even bother to read the article? Nothing says they can't be over-weight or out of shape. You simply have to take a class.

It's a knee jerk reaction that people seem to have when it comes to being healthy. As soon as they hear "fat people must..." they get all bent out of shape.

Taking one of those classes is really good for the most obese people lacking any will to giht against it. The thing about not being able to graduate is not right..

A lot of universities have a physical education requirement. My parents always joke about taking a bowling class that qualified as their PE credit. I couldn't graduate high school without taking and passing gym every year I was there. I was a very overweight teenager and even I managed that. You don't go to a university without looking at the courses you are required to take for your degree and if you do then blame only yourself.

Nor did I say it was...in the first half of the post. I suppose it's not mandatory to actually LOSE any weigh. They could be gorging on a couple of Extra Large Pepperoni & Anchovies after class. I know people who work out like mad 1-2 hours a day and they're still overweight and people who don't get off their chairs and are paper-thin. Sport isn't all, diet and a good eating schedule are far more important. But really what's the purpose of it all if not making them lose weight? Why isn't it imposed on the other students too?
