Still from what I see it's negative effect is compounded by the fact that many affiliates are not "actively selling" anything.

2 over simplified examples:

I don't think content sharing sites, forums and torrents are much of a competition of paysites...its mostly underage surfers on those. No adult with money has time to look through all these sources during his job time of when he comes home. He also doesn't have the skills to find these sites and navigate through them.
