Holy shit... goodbye privacy

The EU is currently working on Project INDECT. A system intended to do the following:

Quote:
Project Description

Intelligent information system supporting observation, searching and detection for security of citizens in urban environment.
The main objectives of the INDECT project are:

* to develop a platform for: the registration and exchange of operational data, acquisition of multimedia content, intelligent processing of all information and automatic detection of threats and recognition of abnormal behaviour or violence,
* to develop the prototype of an integrated, network-centric system supporting the operational activities of police officers, providing techniques and tools for observation of various mobile objects,
* to develop a new type of search engine combining direct search of images and video based on watermarked contents, and the storage of metadata in the form of digital watermarks,

The main expected results of the INDECT project are:

* to realise a trial installation of the monitoring and surveillance system in various points of city agglomeration and demonstration of the prototype of the system with 15 node stations,
* implementation of a distributed computer system that is capable of acquisition, storage and effective sharing on demand of the data as well as intelligent processing,
* construction of a family of prototypes of devices used for mobile object tracking,
* construction of a search engine for fast detection of persons and documents based on watermarking technology and utilising comprehensive research on watermarking technology used for semantic search,
* construction of agents assigned to continuous and automatic monitoring of public resources such as: web sites, discussion forums, UseNet groups, file servers, p2p networks as well as individual computer systems,
* elaboration of Internet based intelligence gathering system, both active and passive, and demonstrating its efficiency in a measurable way.
Translation:

They want to create an automated system that gathers all data it can find on the internet and combine it with all data from security cams and such. In other words, a system that tries to gather and combine all possible data on you and continuously keep an eye on you - 24/7 surveillance, online and offline, for everyone.

CCTV cams in all major cities, security cams in stores, product codes being registered during sales.

Keep in mind: systems like the one I mentioned include face recognition features, meaning a cam just has to spot you for you to be identified.

Say goodbye to privacy and say hello to - voyeurism.

It's going to be a world wide voyeurism where people get spied on by cams on the streets. Obviously celebrities, beautiful people and pornstars will get the most attention.

Dying bums that are dying, starving and freezing on the streets will be left to die like always. And nobody will give a shit even if 1,000 eyes are staring at them. Example: here are some bums in New York:

(I took both of these photos myself on Sept. 29, 2009)

1984. We are almost there..

Looks like the government is working to track everything.

Spying and watching is easy.

Taking action - that's the hard part.

Think back further: 1984 - the book, not the year. It's as if contemporary political leaders took it as a blueprint, rather than a warning.

What worries me most, however, is not what current governments will do with these data and systems. They may not respect our privacy, but their intentions are (mostly) good - to prevent crime and terrorism.

But what about 50 years from now?

The world population will have grown about 50% by that time and a number of key resources (including oil) are likely to be mostly depleted by then. That's a surefire recipe for a major global crisis on a scale never seen before, and it pretty much ensures that a number of new dictatorships and tyrannies will arise.

What would Stalinism or fascism be like when the government has virtually unlimited technological means of observing its citizens? The world might find out before the end of this century...

This is like all those "future" movies, but without any of the additional coolness like crazy advanced and automated technology.
I feel jipped by not getting that but getting this advanced monitoring system.

They need to release some awesome "Futuristic" tech and systems to go along with this and I'd be able to accept it a bit better!

Yup, systems such as this are already in place. West Edmonton Mall's latest security system tracks every individual moving object in the building, and determines based upon your movements whether or not you are a suspicious individual. If the system determines that your movements and activities in the mall are suspicious, it will focus in on you and snap shots until it has a good clear shot of your face, which is then saved to the database. The system then runs your face against the existing database to see if you have been previously identified as a suspicious individual in the building. If your face is a hit in the existing database, security is notified and you are put under manned surveillance.

That system went into effect a few years ago now. But I remember reading about it clearly as the ability of the system blew my mind.

That dutch 'green levy' is interesting... but keep in mind the country is extremely small.

The Big Brother thing has been portrayed in so many movies, books, etc I think people have almost accepted the idea. I agree there's a fine line between protecting kids (and adults for that matter) against everything -- but when does it become invasion of privacy, who knows.

Its like Google storing everything you ever search for... collectively a profile of "you" that could be embarassingly dangerous depending on how much midget porn you're looking up.

Then there's the facial recognition software .. tagging on facebook.. things like that. Will be possible to do a search and pull up all kinds of photos of you -- that other people took and you have no knowledge of.

This stuff is already active, its just a matter of putting it all together that's scary.

But its for our own good. We are too stupid to know what is best for us. It's best to trust the state for our needs. All Hail the great leader. We are not worthy.

I read somewhere they are almost ready with an app for your phone that will let you snap a picture with your camera phone and by face recognition it will give you all the available information on that person.

So let's think of all the negative and positive possibilities

As for the original topic, haven't some of these technologies been used since 9/11?

Don't forget that if you have a cell phone the carrier can easily track you. It doesn't need to be making calls, nor does it need an inbuilt GPS, just needs to be switched on and communicating with towers in order to get the best signal.

Not to downplay the seriousness of this but we are doomed.

We are already under almost constant surveillance and it will expand to total with time.

That movie is an underrated classic btw

And what about a combination of things? Perhaps a 3 minute montage of your worst moments over the past 30 years? Recorded evidence of your message board posts 15 years ago? A file containing your 25 most embarrassing purchases over the last 20 years? Footage of every time in your entire life that you've gotten an erection at an inopportune moment?

And if you wouldn't mind those things being recorded... what about if you were a politician, running for office against the party in power right now? Would you mind things like that "accidentally" surfacing?

The problem with data aggregation is that every tiny mistake you ever made in a public place, whether virtual or real, is linked to you. Make out with some slutty chick at age 20, and 40 years later it will still be in your "file", there to be found with just a simple search.

Soon a person could be sitting at a bar, spot someone interesting down the line, capture the person's image on their phone and run it through an app. Up pops all the personal information available from a variety of sources about that person. With a few clicks you could find out that person's employment history, medical history, relationship history, criminal history along with a multitude of information people normally wish to keep private.

The game out there for future players is about to change

Basically, they inform us that they need to know everything about us in order to prevent them from accidentally wrongly using information against us. "We can make mistakes, so we need more power." What they conveniently fail to mention is that more power leads to the possibility of larger consequences when that power is abused.

In a sense, it even implies a threat: if you don't give up all your privacy, you might just become the victim of miscarriages of justice.

You may have just inadvertently come up with a great future business. Someone will create a business that people will come to for PIO so that their information is as close as possible to what they want it to be.

That's gold Angry Jew Cat

Shit is happening right now before our eyes

http://www.gfy.com/fucking-around-and-business-discussion/943779-2006-24-ec-freedom-privacy-web-lost.html

http://wyborcza.pl/1,75248,7365091,O..._pod_lupa.html

Where is the freedom?! Human rights to privacy!? The secret of correspondence - Private and Confidential?! Where the fuck this all is!?

The question is what can we do about this shit... the government had lied to us before we have chosen them (they promised not to do such things).. and to the next elections there is a great piece of time left...
