Just read the "study" mentioned in the article. As it turns out, the study isn't a study but another article. The article gets the 4% from a book, which presumably does get it from a study.

So this article references another article which references a book which references some unknown and untraceable study - which happens to be the one that gives a better result than any study that can actually be found.

So, chances of not getting pregnant using this method while assuming the average reported effectiveness rate (77%) over the course of 3 years would be (.77^3)*100=45%. (compared to about 70-80% for condoms, 90-98% for the pill, >98% for pill+condom and <1% for internal ejactulation - all assuming two fertile partners between the ages of 18 and 30)

45% chance of not getting pregnant over the course of 3 years isn't exactly good, but it's not something you'd be unlikely to encounter either.

I should add to that that the pill is far more reliable than I mentioned in this post if the woman in question isn't an idiot and just remembers to take it every day at roughly the same time, and avoids sex or uses additional protection when she has recently had diarrhea or has thrown up.
