I am upgrading my host after years of the same account. It has been forever since I did any research so I just figured I'd get some opinions on here on if this is a good deal.

That is not a bad deal if the host is a decent host with good support. You could get a better deal at a great host if you talk to the people at www.techiemedia.com

That's expensive for less than 10 Mbit, that's generally what I see 35 or 30 unmetered Mbit packages going for these days. I think you can you much better.

Hmmm, the co I'm thinking of has multiple front ends (but presumably the same sales staff) so perhaps we're not talking about the same one... the website I found the $99/mo server on starts with P.

Not who I have been using. But I guess I should start doing some research again. I would think prices have come down alot since I started using them.

I recognise the format of that quote so I'm pretty sure I know who it came from. Here's two of the frontend companies with the same spec server, it's highly likely that the support and network are also identical... pacificrack - http://www.pacificrack.com/dedicated.html , $99/mo plus a free upgrade to 4GB RAM (see the promo info near the top of the page) oc3networks - http://www.oc3networks.com/managed , $149/mo So where did your $179/mo server come from?... I'll leave it up to you to figure out what (if any) differences there are besides the price. ![]() |

if you think 2000 gigs is less then 10 mbit you need to work on your math a little.

P4 2.6GHz 512MB DDR RAM 80GB PATA HDD I asked about upgrading and that was the info they sent me. I figured they have been upgrading their system and I was probably stuck on some old network that was just not up to par with what they typically sell now. They want me to upgrade to the $179 account because they said I am to low on memory and it crashes my server. I honestly barely know shit about this stuff since I just mainly focus on building sites and doing photography. I don't build computers let alone servers so most of the info just kinda confuses me a bit. |

So why are they quoting you $30 a month more than their site?

Not sure I think they just upgraded what they offer and left me on the shitty server I started on years ago. I emailed them to ask the same question today but they never got back to me. I was looking on their site today and didn't see what I have on their anywhere so I think they don't offer that anymore they just leave idiots like me with it since I never really check up on my server stuff.
Until now that it is crashing every week or so. |

Yes, a 2.x P4/0.5GB RAM/80GB HD is effectively obsolete, or very low end if you were able to order one today.
If it's only lack of RAM that is the issue then it may just be worth adding in more RAM... 30 mins of downtime to fit a couple more sticks versus transferring everything to a new server and ironing out the quirks, ... If I were you I'd ask for a discount on your existing server (since the h/w is obsolete) and perhaps ask them nicely if they can throw some more RAM into it. They've already written off the hardware so they're not losing any money... $149/mo for that spec is almost pure gravy. |

I'm pretty sure George was including the price of cPanel or Plesk license in that quote he sent you to get you moved off the really outdated control panel in use on your current machine as it won't be transferable onto a new machine.

While I would certainly like the opportunity to earn your hosting for Caro.Net I have to agree with Rowan's wisdom and insight.
Beyond the RAM upgrade you might investigate your network connections a little bit. While 2000 GB of transfer and 10 Mbps Private LAN connections may be plenty for you, look to take advantage of your 1 Gbps NIC's with a minimum connection to your supporting network of at least 100Mbps. Good luck with your upgrades and if you do search further please keep me in mind, Caro.Net is the network home to AEBN and I would certainly do my best to earn your business. Best of prosperity in the New Year!

OK once again the guys at OC3 hooked me up and are taking care of me. What a relief I don't have to move all my sites somewhere new. They really stepped up on this one since I was on such a old server they are fixing me up.
I just wanted to thank everyone for posting and thank OC3 for pulling through and making sure my sites don't crash and burn. |
