Ever had your ATM card skimmed... Does bank refund money?

Got an automated call from the bank this morning saying that my son's ATM card PIN had been compromised. I assume he used it on a bank machine that had been messed with.

Checked the account and see that they took out about $480 before they caught it.

Does the bank normally refund these transactions when ATM cards are involved? I know they do for credit cards, but was wondering if it was different with ATM's since cash is involved.

Cool thanks.

Also just realized I had his card setup for a $500 daily limit on ATM withdrawals, otherwise they would have wiped him out entirely.

Hey Joe, I was asked nicely by some of the people you work with not to expose you as a lying piece of shit. This won't last much longer.

Hopefully you get the refund, a lot of banks won't refund ATM transactions. Since the PIN number needs to be used at the ATM.

I never had these things happen to me. But, I had problems with paypal where people send payments and then a few days later they reverse the payments. Be careful with that.

He never lost the card. It was obviously skimmed by someone. If the bank machine was compromised there is nothing he could have done to prevent that from happening.

Well of course they would refund the money if the ATM itself was tampered with.

The bank would loose it's ass in court if they didn't take responsibility for their customer's information getting stolen through unsecured ATMs. You honestly thought your bank would just tell you "that sucks" if their own system was compromised and they lost your money?

Well I didn't know, that's why I asked. And I am just assuming a bank machine was tampered with, they never actually said when they called. How else would it happen? Could also be a shady clerk in a department store that seen him entering his PIN and then did some transaction later on. I don't know how the ATM systems work to be honest.

After searching more, it looks like as long as you can prove you didn't contribute to the theft due to your own negligence the bank should cover it.

It would be hard to tell weather it was skimmed or not, and yes they usually refund you the money, and if it was a ATM debit card they might give you a hard time. This is why I tell all my banks........don't send me or my wife an ATM debit card...we only want the regular banking ATM card. If someone gets your debit card number they can use that number to steal your money very easy.

Also whenever you go to an ATM or to a bank that asks you to punch in your pin number...cover they keypad with your other hand. If you look up at the ceiling you will notice the survalience cameras.

It depends on the bank, and I believe a lot of people in this thread are misunderstanding your actual question. If you are indeed talking about a PIN transaction then things can get fishy. Fraudulent transactions, made using the PIN number, are commonly not refunded by U.S. Banks. Unless it is proven to be fraud, ie; the bank's system or security was compromised.

Reason being, no one should know your PIN number. It cannot in reality be "stolen", as it's only in your head or the bank's system. If it's written down somewhere or anything, then you're at fault as it's against the TOS/TC to write down or store your PIN anywhere. It's not like you can call an automated system to get your PIN, you cannot even call a bank rep and get your PIN, they don't have access to that information.

However you might be in the clear, since they called you - which would lead me to believe it is probably a fault on their end.

wrong your PIN can 100% be stolen. Use your debit card at some mom and pop convenience store/gas station all they need is a camera to film what #'s you hit when you use it. and there was a time when people would put card skimmers on atm machines and have a tiny wireless camera film you as your entered in your PIN.

If a convenience store was skimming card numbers and pin numbers. It wouldn't take long at all for authorities to figure out where those cards were being skimmed from.

As for the ATM machines being hit, I already stated that would be the banks fault and they would indeed be required to pay any refunds for those.

the authorities don't care unless it hits a certain $$ amount, something above $40k.

Just as a final update, we went to the branch today and he had to fill out a form stating he did not make the withdrawals, and asking if he had his PIN written down anywhere. Obviously if he answered "yes" they wouldn't have refunded it.

Just checked his account online and they already credited back the full amount. Only took a couple hours.

I had my card stolen somehow too. I have the card in hand, and someone in FL (I am in CA) bought $150 in gas. Bank closed the card, refunded the $ and sent me a new card.
