*This piece isn’t about a building, but about the sensibility of Gothic High Tech. In buildings, in photos, in movies… in Los Angeles, Dubai, Las Vegas and of course the poster-child, Detroit.

*I bet you’re not seeing a lot of empty skyscrapers in Shanghai right now, even though they overbuilt in Pudong like crazy. There’s a big Gothic High Tech in China all right, but it’s all crumbling stuff built by Communists… haunted buildings where the busy consumers sidle by and shudder.

“To a remarkable degree, the metaphors and symbols of the built environment have been dominated in recent months by images of unneeded, sealed-off, ruined, forlorn or forsaken buildings and cityscapes. The Burj Dubai is just the latest — and biggest — in this string of monuments to architectural vacancy.”

very very impressive! though it looks like the mean empire somehow..partly Gaudi inspired?

i have been in Sears tower on the top floor and was blown away by the height and size of that building. i mean this building is a city in itself with restaurants, shopping markets and recreational possibilities.

It will be vacant for a long time. Maybe they can use it as a storage for their oil

LOL - 90% sold. I lived there in 2005/2006 and I know tons of people who bought places. Actually, funny story: There was a guy that was in the group of first purchasers. Basically, everyone (outside of private reservations) was told to show up, have their cleared bank check ready for the unit(s)/floor(s), and, if their purchase was still available when they got to the desk, then it was theirs. So, this guy gets in, buys like 5-10 units (I can't remember but this story was in the 'Khaleej Times' in 05-06). He waits outside after completing his purchase while the first round of units sells out super-fast (it was within hours). As soon as this instance is announced, he doubles his money selling his newly purchased units to the leftovers. No shit.
