:stop The aweful truth about Oranges

The truth about oranges that so few talk about while admiring their pretty color, is quite simply, that they are very risky as a fruit.

They're not the consistent, rock solid and dependable choice of a fruit like bananas or grapes. I've just never been let down by a banana or grape.

With oranges, each one usually tastes different. It's a gamble. We rarely talk about this problem as a society. We just look right past it as if it doesn't exist.

You always pick one up thinking "hmm... an orange sounds good" but only because you remember the better oranges you've had... then you peel it, take that bite and think "Fuck, what is this nasty, bitter shit that i just put into my mouth".

Then you'll often turn around and look at all your pretty little oranges and immediately think "aren't those things pretty... i bet they taste wonderful. looks at those colors. wow. surely that last one was a fluke" and you peel another one and you get the same god damned thing.

You're always left thinking "i can't believe i always fall for this shit.... which reminds me, i'm almost out of oranges"

damn you oranges

damn you

I just had some oranges, I think the risk vs reward assessment with regard to taste justifies giving them a go.

I stand by your statement. In recent years, I have had more let downs with oranges than any other fruit. Often they are just sour rather than sweet or have so many pits it just isn't worth the effort. I find that when I crave the orange experience I end up going for a Clementine or satsuma. They tend to be more consistent.

On my way to the office this morning, i was thinking "maybe this is a citrus problem... not an orange problem" - but then i had a hard time recalling ANY negative experience with limes, lemons or grapefruit. but oranges and orange related fruit (tangerines, mandarins, tangelos, clementines etc etc).. nothing but sad sad tales of inconsistency and disappointment.

There are few things worse than having the perfect tangerine for example... then the next 20 are horrible. you keep hoping, even through the disappointment and tasteless next few or more, and you try to remain positive... but it's akin to gambling in Vegas. The only real winner with oranges, is the grower.

You are still correct. I have stopped buying whole bags of any sort of orange or thing in the orange family. That is because I know chances are more than one will be a duff and then I won't finish the bag.

Melons, berries and even apples are far more honest about what they have going on underneath.

To limit your bad experience ratio, I suggest you rely on either Clemetines or Naval oranges. Both of those are almost always a sweet and wonderful tasting fruit. Also, the clementines are generally seedless, which is a plus.
I have to say, for me, and even living in Florida, I find grapefruits can be a real hit or miss gamble.

Different seasons even for the same type of Orange and tree, produce different flavors. Then add in different regions and orange types, the amount of flavors you can get from a single type of Orange is huge, and the orange flavors can be influenced by plants around them too.

Many of the major store brand Oranges are produced for the masses and are blah... Simply buying them fresh and in season, makes an extreme difference.

The problem is caused by premature harvesting. They are not ripe enough simply put.

i wonder which came first, the color orange or the fruit. did the color orange exist before the fruit orange was discovered and somebody decided to name it after the color? if so it's the only fruit that got it's name that way. OR did the color orange get named after the fruit?

It´s about time someone brought this disturbing topic up. The oranges these days just aren´t like what they used to be. Before you could pick up an orange with a big smile on your face knowing that you will be eating a big juicy orange, but now days you gotta be worried about eating these evil bitter oranges that have taken over the world

Why is an orange called an orange when a carrot is more orange than an orange is?

don't get me started on color bias and unfair marketing attempts to give shady oranges an advantage over other similar colored fruits and vegetables by claiming a color as its name. a strategy so clever and devious that you kinda gotta admire it. but definitely unfair.

Bananas are more honest. You can generally tell by the condition of the skin what side of good it will be.
