Anyone here ever ride to Sturgis Motorcycle Rally
I'm planning out my itinerary for a ride to Sturgis this year and it'll be my first time going to this event, so wanted to get some info from folks whom have been there.. such as recommendations on which camp grounds, etc to make my reservations at, cool places to stop at/visit along the way, as well as once in SD. I definitely have MT Rushmore, Yellowstone and Crazy Horse Memorial on my list.. I'm thinking of arriving before the rally start date so I can tour around the area and visit the sites before they're crowded so I can get better photos, etc.
I'll be passing through Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, & Minnesota. I plan on camping instead of hotels.. My first overnight stop will be in PA so I can make a detour and visit Gettysburg and a few other places.. My next overnight stop will be in OH so I can pay Jon Clark a visit. The ride is only 30 hours, but I plan on a leisurely cruise checking shit out along the way. At the moment, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna have to take 90W most of the way.. alot of highway mileage is boring to me so I gotta map out my entire route and plan before making my reservations, etc, so your advice, tips and recommendations are appreciated. I know the event isn't until August, but I want to come up with a basic idea of my stops, etc well in advance so I can start making reservations. |

Hi Sdog, Sorry for the late reply... Traffic to downtown was just fine - a bit slow but only a few minutes.. Along the way you get to see tons of bikes, ppl, etc. I am glad we stayed at the "chip" was the best damm time ![]() I think we saw steppenwolf, styx, lots of other killer bands...

I have gone about 10 times. Not a fan of Buffalo Chip. 2006 sucked as there were over 1 million people that came there and Sturgis was just not built for that many RV's and trailers. I heard that the numbers dropped drastically due to high gas prices, but since they have gone down and this is the 70th I expect the numbers to go back up.
I like the KOA campground in Spearfish. My son wants to go this year, so I will most likely go because it is something a father and son should do at least once. Otherwise, I would just stop by for a day [like I did on the 50th, and that was only 500k additional people]. |

Sturgis is just a few hours north of me. I haven't made it to the rally in quite a while but most of my friends do go. Deadwood is fun for a evening / day if you want to get your gambling on as well. They recently just opened up a new casino/lodge that is pretty nice.
