IMO that shit is dangerous. it forces your body to produce more neurotransmitters than normal so eventually your body will become dependent on it to fire the proper amount. seems like a rush at first because you are over stimulated... think of waking up everyday and having 3 girls give you a beej. after a while it will seem like the norm and the day you stop taking... zoinks!

ive read a lot of studies on this stuff (actually what I wanted to do for a while before i found the interwebs and porn haha) and the long term side effects and withdrawal are bad. Ritalin for instance causes similar effects to Alzheimer - loss of "wrinkles" in the brain, retroactive amnesia, etc,.

not trying to scare you, but just be careful man. most ADD and ADHD patients feel the same effects as being "medicated" with normal exercise, moderate carb diet and regular sleep schedule.

more info:

Methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta, Metadate, Methylin) belongs to the piperidine class of compounds and increases the levels of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain through reuptake inhibition of the monoamine transporters. MPH possesses structural similarities to amphetamine, and though it is less potent, its pharmacological effects are even more closely related to those of cocaine.

now i really want some lol

i knew a few Adderall addicts in college. they would be popping 3-4 pills of 20mg tabs to get the same effect as 1 20mg tab when they first starting using it only a few weeks ago.

cocaine is a bit different as you dont grow as fast of a tolerance off of it

FYI... if your going to score some from your doc, make sure you dont tell him that you "dont feel the buzz" anymore, its a sure sign you are in it for the high

My son was on concerta, it worked very well however it also fucked with his white blood cell count and supressed it, causing him to have a lot of infections. As a result he was taken off and put on Vyvanse (newer ADHD med)

Just because you have read this stuff does not mean its the same for everyone. I was first put on concerta when I was 16 years old and I went from a f student to top of the class straight A student. I took myself off it two years later and ended up dropping out of school. I recently got insurance and asked to be put on something again to help with my adhd and ive been put on Ritalin and although it is not as good as the concerta was ive noticed a huge difference and i have never had any side affects like you have mentioned on either drug.

People do not understand for those who truly have ADD or ADHD in a society that thinks differently then we do and at times does not process information fast enough it is really hard to pay attention or sit still or do what is needed. I am against most medications but I can honestly say until society realizes people with ADD and ADHD have a lot of special gifts and give them the proper environment to use those gifts meds is the best we got.

Drugs are NOT always the answer. A kid is a little hyper so we give him Ritalin or Adderall. These DR's should be killed. ADD and ADHD are nothing but made up conditions by the drug companies to sell more product.

drugs are drugs, just do them and not try to put down one while enjoying the other.

if you do one drug you are a drug user, doesnt matter which one, legalize em all!

Fail.

Drugs are not always the answer, that much we agree on.

In your world, we'd ignore the legitimate conditions of ADD and ADHD, and leave a child who is "a little hyper" (and, btw, lots of children don't have the hyperactivity component), leave them to flounder in school, destroy their confidence as a student and in themselves, stunt their social growth, then wonder why in the world they turn out to be underachieving fuck ups, with a goodly percentage of them having a criminal record.

In my world, we'd first make sure that the diagnosis was correct by working with the school, the doctors involved, any therapist involved, and we'd use the time tested tools available to us to make sure that the child did have ADD and ADHD.

We'd then treat their legitimate condition with prescription drugs, if necessary, the same way we'd treat a child who had diabetes with insulin if they needed it.

We'd recognize that no ADHD/ADD medicine is a perfect cure, and we'd work on tailored cognitive behavioral therapies in conjunction with the medication treatment. We'd help children realize that some of the brightest people in the world have/have had ADHD/ADD, and that their success can be enhanced by recognizing their own strengths and learning how to compensate for their weakness.

And we'd continue to work with the teachers and school systems in a partnership, making sure that school is a place where they can flourish as opposed to being an environment that shuts them out because they don't fit into a perfectly prescribed round hole.

when I was growing up it was okay to be hyperactive, my mom would let me go outside and run around in the yard and be a kid.

today, "oh my little angel has ADD" lets lock him in his room, give him Adderall and television, and you wonder why he shoots a school full of kids aon Prom Night?

LOL

let kids be kids instead of drugging them up, but hey, the same parents who drug up their teens were giving their kids Benadryl as infants to keep them quiet at night.

reap what you sow.

Good thread. I have been smoking since I was young but never diagnosed for this. I prefer to stay away from pills of any kind if I can. Anyone else think they might have this disease but never have seen doctor for it?

Fletch, I pretty much like you okay, and this is admittedly a topic that I feel strongly about...

but I wonder if your thoughts would be the same if a few years down the road your new child ends up with ADD/ADHD?

I wonder if you'd let her fail in school, knowing full well that she was smart, and that she was actually trying her very best. Would you consider all available options to help her, or would you just let her fail, marking it down to "letting kids be kids"?

I'd say it is one of those instances where it's easy to have an opinion and downgrade other parents when you've not been faced with their circumstances.

Oh, and btw...when children experience success as students, make friends, and have the mental security of knowing that their parents are on their side, that their teachers are on their side, they generally grow up to be confident, capable beings not the type that shoot up the prom.

how come now everyone has to bring my child into anything I make a fucking post about?

i posted about how things have changed since I was in school, and it has nothing to do with my child. Just because you feel strongly about a topic doesnt mean you need to seek out some kind of "if your kid was" angle. Parents are quick to put kids on drugs today has nothing to do with my personal life. Thats was my only point. Stick to topic.

kurt cobain - on meds since child
brad nowell on meds since a child

do the math.

My opinion is that when you make a post that

a) tells personal experience from your childhood

that you have already brought your personal life into it

and

when your post

b) condemns the decision of other parents

and are in are effect saying that you'd never make the same choices that they have, if you were faced with similar circumstances

then the question of what you yourself would do in similar circumstances is indeed on topic.

I think it's safe to say that we disagree, so I'll leave you to it.

i didnt mention my child, you did.

My post was specifically about parents giving kids drugs at early age, as rules state, leave personal lives out and stick top the topic. My post about me growing up was about my personal experience relative to the discussion.

If I had said: "I dont plan on giving my kid any ADD drugs" then come at me, but otherwise just leave my daughter out of this. My post was about me, and my mom making me go outside and run around and expend that energy.nothing about my personal choices for my child.

ive just noticed that now everyojne brings my daughter into threads when I make posts, its silly.

I understand where you are coming from but I firmly believe with ADD and ADHD medicine is NOT the answer. Some kids are just more hyper then others just as some kids can't concentrate as well as others. We're all different and no two brains are the same. ADD and ADHD can be solved with eating right and exercising. When you are a kid or young adult you are supposed to be full of energy! Don't give them VERY SERIOUS drugs... I promise you in 25 to 50 years those drugs will be illegal.

Lets not forget the doctors get bonuses, trips, etc for prescribing the shit.

And I'm not talking about drugs in general. There are some very good drugs out there for serious problems. I'm only talking about ADD and ADHD. Its made up bullshit!

Unfortunately ADD/ADHD isn't HYPERACTIVE as in your kid is bouncing off the walls, its actually all the random off the wall thoughts ideas/bouncing around in their head that is the "hyperactive" part.

Ironically all these med are all a derivative of methamphetamine, Its just a controlled amount of speed they feed you

You don't have to be "bouncing off the walls", its shown regular minimal dosages can greatly improve day to day operations of a person without the need for it.

Yes living a better life through modern chemistry is great.

I do. People say i have a high energy level ;-)
Smoking pot will make me sit down and be less active.

Last year there were some people here from child protection services (i invited them because of my son's mom). First thing they said: Do you have ADHD?

Sometime speople think i am high on coke, yet i never used any hard drugs ever, lol.

You might be right, i guess i am just hyperactive

They used to say the same thing about depression, anxiety and other mental issues. We all know those are real and so is ADD and ADHD.

Interestingly enough, a few blackhat webmasters I know say they take ADDERAL to increase productivity, focus, and problem solving skills. Who am I to argue with 5 figure weekly checks?

Pharma-augmented webmastering = the future?

I don't have ADHD or any focus issues so I'm kinda on the fence about this. Don't want to fuck with brain chemistry although the bling level does seem somewhat tempting.
