Sometimes being in business fucking sucks

Do you make decisions based on being nice to people and giving them breaks because they were good to you when you were starting out, or do you make decisions based on what's best for your business?

Guilt trips fucking suck.

just had to get that off my chest

Funny, I contemplate a similiar situation myself. But think of it this way, they believed in you when nobody else probably did. They took a chance on you and invested their time to help you out, I graciously will return the favour.

From a business point of view, it probably does mean less money, but it also improves business relations with that company which can be worth more in the long run.

Do what you can to help without shooting yourself in the foot; calm down, figure out a way to do that. I think your emotions are running wild.

I guess that's the way it's gotta be if you want to be a success.
Lesson learned.

You don't have to be a prick to be a success.

It's just easier.

If you're empty inside, fuck 'em. Fuck 'em all.

If you care about those who have lent out a helping hand, then return the favor.

Being me is far more important than an extra $100 note in my pocket every week.

I hear ya, not to long ago a couple business associates who were really the nicest guys in the world (I even flew down to meet them) just didnt become cost-effective for me anymore and I knew that I was one of there biggest clients at the time.

Right before I broke it off they sent me some gifts... one was a prosperity buddha... It made me feel so bad I continued on with them for a while longer even though it was costing me a lot.

Sooner or later you just gotta break it off. Unfortunately for me I was not in a position to provide an honest explanation so I pretty much avoid their phone calls.

I feel bad about it but thats just the way it goes.

I have, I'm very thankful for help people give and ALWAYS return the favor and then some. I ask a million questions and when someone helps me and if they want something in return, then absolutely! That's normal.

But I there comes a point when people start taking advantage of you after you've returned the favor and they keep wanting more and more and you start cutting into your own business because you feel bad for them.

It's pretty simple. If you're feeling genuine guilt, you aren't doing the right thing.

I do understand the thinking behind this statement but is not always true.

I for one would rather give someone a helping hand then making a extra $20 from not helping them. The pay off is in the long run, not the here and now.

Just my $42.29 worth

You can always give some one a helping hand, but remember there is only so much room in the life raft.

Always consider your decisions in the bigger picture, how many will suffer if you go broke?

It depends if they were a major contributing factor to your success... If you couldn't have made it without them, then you should look after them till the end.

People have fucked me over in the past after I really did help them out big time.

This one guy was getting shit load of the hottest SE traffic and making about $200 per day from it - I helped him out, pointed him in the right direction and totally redeisgned his sales approach, created copy for him that presold his sponsor fastastically... I spent about 40 hours doing this for him and in return all I wanted was to get the 5% webmaster refferal fee for 6 months - so basically he was losing nothing.

Overnight he went from making $200 per day to $2,000 per day!

After 4 weeks he ripped me off and switched sponsors cutting me out the deal...

I'd invested hard work, time and expertise in this guy and he fucked me over... Now, I don't know wether you believe in karma or not but I'm beginning to...

About 2 weeks after the switch, his great listings became not bad listings, 2 weeks after that and he isn't a first page player any more... I thought about sueing him as I did get a written agreement but the powers that be hit him harder than my lawyer ever could... I hope the fucker is out of business.

Give and you will receive!

I know exactly what you going thru. I started out in 97 and took part on the full boom of the internet. I made shitloads of money and I thought lets share it with my friends. I gave them jobs and paid them good but when the table started to turn back to just normal in 2001 I had to lay them off. Was the hardest part of the business.

Money may come and come and go but your personal and business (the same think really) integrity is a damned site harder to get back once you've apparently lost it.

If of course you consider this to be a matter of integrity!

Good Luck!

Do you know Nash? Probably, due to Holywood these days.

He was a mathematician and what he said, in a very rough format, I admit it, is that what is best for YOU is what maximise your and your colleques benefit all at the same time. Not what maximise solely your benefit (For this stems the well known Nash Equilibrium)

In other words, when you have some colleques, a choice to abandonded them is a hard one. And thats because your OWN value is maximised because of them. And that in many ways.

So, usually is not a matter of what is good or bad. We all understand that good partners help us succeed, even when we can't figure out how exactly they do that.
