Huge Iceberg breaks off Antarctica

Scientists say a vast iceberg weighing billions of tonnes which broke off the Antarctic continent this month poses a potential threat to the circulation of the world's oceans.

Are we saying that because an iceberg busted off to beware of scammers trying to "cash in" on it? What are they earning if they warn you that it could mess with ocean circulation? Are they winning? congrats to the winners?

This isn't any ordinary iceberg. It's the size of Luxembourg. That's not just something that happens all the time. For you Americans it's the size of Rhode Island.

Yeah, I think that scientists always have make a big stink about stuff like this so that in case something actually does go awry, they can say "I totally called it!"

And all the rightwingers, without any idea of the various scientific theories, line up like parrots on a branch to repeat rupert murdoch's party line.

It must be nice not to have to think a bit for yourselves. You have a billionaire to tell you what you think.

More ice breaking off antartica may or may not have any major significance. However, repeating murdoch DEFINITELY has no significance.

You know that if total global warming happened, the icebergs would melt. This would mean the water level would rise by many meters. This would flood cities that are not on a higher ground.

Ice bergs break off Antarctica all the time. It's a natural process and nothing to be alarmed about.

Just another scare for the sheeple who eat this shit up and actually believe in all this Global Warming nonsense.

Hey you guys that are babbling and blaming this on "Global Warming" You might want to listen to what the scientist says in that audio clip. The interviewer asks him WHY this happened.

He said that it is a NATURAL occurence. Not a good one. But a NATURAL one. Had NOTHING to do with "global warming" or anything else that man has done.

Just saying...this incident is totally 100% natural and man has nothing to do with it.

Go back to the page and take a minute to listen for yourselves before babbling on and on about Rupert Murdoch and right wingers and Global Warming.

I can't believe the amount of people who keep their heads in the sand about global warming and arn't smart enough to realize a 1 or 2 degree temp change is catastrophic over long periods...

they just go outside on a cold day and say - pfffft - it's cold - soo much for global warming.

it's why long term planning is impossible with most current political systems

how about the sharp spike in the last 30 years...

i live close to northern communities. they rely on ice roads to get supplies. the roads statistically every year run shorter and shorter seasons.... I see it here as we're effected by the trucks and traffic of the people from the north coming though in the winter.

in my 37 years - a statistically SHORT period of time - winters are shorter. I've scene it in my life already. If you look back 500 years nothing compared to the warming of the last 30 years.

what bothers me about these kinds of people is that regardless if global warming is "real", regardless of it being our fault or not we should be striving to be a as clean as possible in industry, cars, everything...

Whether or not you believe in Global Warming had nothing to do with this story.

You need to listen to what the scientist says on the audio clip. They ask him what caused THIS particular occurrence.

He replied it was a NATURAL thing. Happens in nature. Nothing to do with global warming.

That's the problem with these kinds of issues. People on both sides of global warming get a knee jerk reaction to everything that happens.

Hey, sometimes BAD shit happens all on it's own. Just ask the citizens of ancient Pompeii for instance.

This is one of those bad things that happened on it's own. Yes, it's an ego blow to all mankind...but we're just gonna have to accept that we didn't (and probably couldn't) do something of this magnitude.

Obviously we are responsible for contributing to this, but at the same time you need accept that global warmer and the melting of the icecaps is going to increase exponentially. Take an ice cube, weigh it, drop it in a glass of water, wait and time it until the ice cube reaches half it's original weight. Then time what it takes for the second half to melt. The second half is gonna melt faster. That's just the way it is, and regardless of our own influence, we're going to see it going by faster and faster.

There's no magical fairy dust that is going to stop what has been set in motion here.

How are Ice Caps melting going to raise the ocean level?

Just asking.

I'm not a scientist and have no "side" in this battle. But don't the ice caps already float on the water? I do know that they have used pictures of polar bears floating away on pieces that became detached right?

So if it's already on the water...there will be no change in volume when the thing melts. At least that seems logical to me.

If I take a glass and fill it with ice cubes, and then fill it to the top with water...it isn't gonna overflow when the ice melts. It's the same volume.

Am I just being too simplistic with that line of thinking?

Or are they saying that when ice that is on land mass melts and goes into the ocean it will cause the ocean to rise?

Just asking because I've read people saying that when all these icebergs melt the ocean will rise. And icebergs are floating in the water already.

they just go outside on a cold day and say - pfffft - it's cold - soo much for global warming.

it's why long term planning is impossible with most current political systems
Coldest February my state here in the U.S. has had in 30 years I heard this morning...

I thought the swine flu was the major OH NOES!!! for this portion of the year. Are we back on Global warming again?

You're not taking into account the difference in density between fresh water and salt water. Typically an object immersed in a fluid is buoyed up by a force equal to the weight of the fluid it displaces. However, freshwater is not as dense as saltwater, freshwater actually has greater volume than an equivalent weight of saltwater. Thus, when freshwater ice melts in the ocean, it contributes a greater volume of melt water than it originally displaced.

in my 37 years - a statistically SHORT period of time - winters are shorter. I've scene it in my life already. If you look back 500 years nothing compared to the warming of the last 30 years.
Hmm Urban spread, and a shit load of black pavement all over the planet probably has nothing to do with temps showing higher the last 30 to 100 years I suppose.

That sounds pretty good. No idea it it's right or not. But it just convinced me.

Not to mention the fact that a good portion of that ice is above sea level. It's not just gonna stay in a pile when it melts.

I'm pretty sure it's right... you're not crazy for thinking that though. You're not too far off base. Sea icebergs will not cause the level to rise, its fresh water in places like Antarctica and Greenland that would cause a sea level rise and if it all melted, the entire shape of our continents would be completely altered.

tl;dr i wear swim trunks under everything... just in case.
