is 192.168.* a fake ip?

I have scammers who sign up and some of them use ip's like 192.168.1.2 or something, but isnt that someones personal ip?
so if I block everything from 192.168 range then Im not blocking legitimate people am I?

Read this: http://compnetworking.about.com/od/r...68_0_1_def.htm

192.168.0.1 brings up my modem, so it looks to me like someone is using a proxy server to fuck around with you.

Werid, that's the IP some routers use as default address for the router itself:

I thought that most routers used that 192.168.1.___

But they should still have an ip from their internet provider
Like if I set a router up, everything here would get a 192 ip, but the modem would still be a 24 or 68 which is what should show up to anyone out on the internet

I ban them cause they annoy me and put me in a bad mood. Im not big on second chances.

They'll find another girl.

Id rather block 50 people than let someone upset me. Or I'll just turn off my cam. It does take alot to really upset me though.

that ip range is typically used for local area networking. If someone is coming to your site from there it is fake.

What you may be seeing is one of your own machines access another. This IP address is a Local Network address (local meaning, local to that machine).

I dont have affiliates. I have a little dating site and tons of scammers from ghana, nigeria, chad, the philiphines, china, etc, etc.
they sign up and get my members to meet them on yahoo and then hit them up for money.
Im noticing a wave of these scum bags are using ip's that begin with 192.168

How are you recording these IPs? It would be very unusual for a 192.168.x.x IP to be able to connect to you since these RFC1918 ranges are not globally routed, and many networks would have packets to and/or from those ranges explicitly firewalled.

In general the only way that a 192.168.x.x IP could connect to your server is if it's within the same network. Another customer at your host playing funny buggers?

my site records the ip address of new registrations. and i had a wake of 192.168.... ip's that were all scammers.
i have my own server that isnt shared so i dont know how other people could access it, unless theres some kind of trojan on my server. i dont know how that would happen my host is great about security

HOW does your site decide which IP to record?

If it's using the X_FORWARDED_FOR field to try to guess the real IP (behind a proxy) then it's not surprising that it's reporting private network IPs.
