This is why I hate getting a new computer....

Purchased a new desktop and laptop to replace my dinosaur WinXP machines (desktop is 4 years old..laptop is older). Laptop arrived today.. the new desktop is still a couple of weeks out. On top of installing programs that I use, remembering passwords for things, etc.. There's also learning the how-tos of Win7 on the fly. File transfers of working files gotta go to different places than where they went in XP, etc.

When the desktop gets here I'll have to do it all over again.

And I wonder why I haven't done this in 4 years.

I loved xp, dont like my win7 but had no choice but to take it.

It took forever to figure out how to get my "Show Desktop" button back on the left, and it doesnt let you move files around inside a folder, it auto organizes them and you cant turn it off.
grrrrr

Took me about 4 hours to totally set up a machine from scratch, and I have a ton of programs.

You have to be organised and put everything on an external drive for the easy transfer win.

I love Windows7, best MS OS yet I reckon.

just found out my desktop with be here faster than planned. Original date was March 26th.. now it's March 10th.

Still running on my old desktop till then.. but I have most of the things I need set up on the laptop. Get to reconfigure new bat files for data transfers and such.

Biggest thing other than learning Win7 after XP for so many years is going from (don't laugh) Pentium 4 to i7core

It's like warp speed.

Yeah.. when I'm moving my data files from desktop to laptop and back I have a bat file set up to grab the necessary files and put them on a usb stick.

I wanted to mess with the networking tho this time around just so I know how. Hardest of that so far was to figure out getting into to the appdata folder.

It won't let me in the 'documents and settings' folder, but I'm wondering if that's gone the same way of the old applicationdata folder. Just haven't researched it yet.

Yes, that is very irritating - was the same on vista. Most of the things you want are actually in the C:\Users folder.

I have no idea why they don't allow you access to those folders, crazy.

I hear you, I have a Quad Core i7 on this Alienware laptop I bought a few months ago, before that I was getting by on a 6 year old desktop which worked fine for most things.

If you run Time Machine ALL of your programs, passwords, settings, etc...will be automatically set up on your new computer.

Oh wait.....You didn't buy a Mac.

If using FF there is no need to remember passwords... Just send signon.txt, signon2.txt signon3.txt and key3.db to the new computer save them in the same folder on the new system, all your password info will be transfered over. If that doesn't work get a FF Password decoder there are several out there.

I've got the transfer for FF - I copy the actual profile and rename it on the new system to whatever the new system set it's at. , Statsremote, etc down..

It was emails (several of them) for a header retrieval program and ftp (several of them)... but I wrote this down this time.. (wonder why I didn't do that before).

my ftp PWs were by biggest nemesis when I bought my new system... Writing them down, what a novel idea.... I wish I had thought of that! LOL

Thanks bm_bradley, I thought they would have locked it down a lot more than that, it actually works going into the properties and removing the deny listing.

Yes I completly agree you should of bought a mac, so that every piece of computer equipment that comes out and is on sale, You can look like a tool and say" Will this work on a mac" Best sign I ever seen in a computer store. "This is a computer store not a fruit stand we do not work on Mac's."

I'm stuck in the past too, I've upgraded my system (CPU+motherboard is about 18 months old) but I'm still running good old XP.

I don't like steep learning curves and companies that think they have to make a major interface every few years in order to stay hip. I'm not looking forward to learning W7...

it is annoying, but I format my system drive about once very six months, so I've gotten used to it. There are ways to speed it up

I've had all the bits sat in boxes on my desk for nearly a week now waiting for me to find the time and motivation to waste a day giving my computer a brain / heart / lung / kidney / liver / bollock transplant. Going to stick with XP though when I do it.
