President Obama: Tea Party activists have 'legitimate concerns'

But Obama emphasized that he does't want to paint Tea Party activists "in broad brushes" and that he still hopes to win them over - or at least address their concerns.

"I think that there's a broader circle around that core group of people who are legitimately concerned about the deficit, who are legitimately concerned that the federal government may be taking on too much," the President told Lauer.

"And I think those are folks who have legitimate concerns. And my hope is that as we move forward and we're tackling things like the deficit, imposing a freeze on domestic spending, taking steps that show we are sincere about dealing with our long-term problems, that some of that group will dissipate."

OK, some quick math here
over 300,000,000 us citizens
14,900,000 umemployed
30,000,000 are going to get health insurance
national debt is 12,672,971,000,000
that comes out to 42,000 per person
Now why would people be upset?

They don't really care, except when taxes are increased. Bush didn't directly increase taxes.

This is how the right skews numbers.... by claiming things like these outrageous numbers but never providing context. The typical person works 35 years...

$186,000 / 35 years = $5314/year during their working lifetime... or an average of $442 per month.

Here is an interesting fact.
Total US Household Net Worth as of 2007 was $55,600,000,000,000. If you divide that by a population of 300,000,000 you get an average of $183,000 per capita. Interesting fact isn't it?

Since doing away with the Gold Standard our currency is valued based on Labor Economics... or the value of our output as a country.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labor_theory_of_value

If you use these calculations... which most economists do... we are in no real danger because our output plus national net worth exceeds the debt by far.

I am not saying that nothing should be done... only stating that the problem isn't quite as epic as imagined by the fearmongerers.

Maybe instead of directing your anger at the guy that started it, maybe aim some it at president that still has us there, it's been 15 months

like I said, it was simple math
Im sure the economists are polarized by the party they represent, I just see 14.9 million people out of work and more under employed. I see NAFTA making it easier for companies to move jobs to more favorable labor markets. I remember in 2000, my step dad bought a new dodge truck with a cummings, he was a little pissed when he found out it was assembled in Mexico.

less people paying taxes, means less money
Obama seems to be spending more money
do that math

BTW, if your going to bring up the us household net worth, youshould also bring up the liability per person with things like SSN, medicare, prescription drug and US unfunded liabilites, comes to about $349k

You should totally develop a mainstream political site Vendzilla. You could build a Beck/Limbaugh like fan base and maybe make some decent cash with it, considering the passion you have on the topic.

I'm sorry, as someone who delves deeply into economics, I found this statement absolutely hilarious. No offense nation but you're in no position to state that the right skews numbers, because the left does it as well. Here.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debt-to-GDP_ratio
The left keeps spinning everything claiming the level is fine, when that is nowhere close to being accurate.
The most the CBO could spin it was 90% of the GDP by this year.. Now you take programs like social security and medicare, and you get a staggering number.

Under certain circumstances. I would say we have a chance to get out. If our budget deficit was constantly reducing, rather than reaching a historical high every month. If we had a strong dollar, strong domestic demand, trade surplus or reduced trade deficit, and most important, a huge manufacturing economy. Now, we have none of those. We have a dollar teetering on the edge of destruction, and overvalued stock market, and and unsustainable deficits and debts. So please don't try to spin reality and then claim the right is spinning it, no offense.

Not sure where you got this "fact". The only fact is that household net worth has been steadily declining and it's just shit when adjusted for inflation. Another interesting fact is that based on our current deficits and debts, for every dollar Americans make, they spend about 1.50.

I want to see a better country.
Besides I have something better I'm working on

I havn't worked for Playboy for over a year now
I loved my time there and people, but now I have something new I'm working on

I'm not trying to pick a fight with anyone, I thought it was pretty cool that Obama acknowledged the Tea Party, something that many people on this board have turned their nose up to. But wait a minute, in this country, you have the right to bitch and complain about what pisses you off
we have that freedom and they are excercising it. I have some friends that are really into it. I'm just watching to see what happens next.
Just like the press bashing Palin, yet she is still there and her popularity is growing, Can you argue that?

I just redesigned vendzilla.com and will be adding things to it very soon, maybe I will put up some of the questions I have about the path the country is on

I was encouraging Vendzilla with a constructive idea. My political bias isn't as extreme or cemented one way or the other with reference to party. I wouldn't be able to choose one and be loyal enough to make a solid go of it. I think Vendzilla could.

You're just trolling, I take it?

No, trolling would be to make a useless post rather than contribute to the conversation Man, some of you are just throwing out that word just to be with a crowd.

Then what's so funny about me making that suggestion to Vendzilla? Did you disagree with it? You don't think he should make a political site of his own? Do you think it'd fail? He doesn't have what it takes?

You should totally develop a mainstream political site Vendzilla. You could build a Beck/Limbaugh like fan base and maybe make some decent cash with it, considering the passion you have on the topic.
Even though it's text, it seems like a mocking tone because you and him have fundamental differences. Also, his passion is due to the amount of time he spends in political threads.

You on the other hand, like to start political threads, so why would you be suggesting to someone else, something that may be just as profitable and valuable for yourself?

Not really, especially if you consider the context of my previous posts in this topic too. I wasn't mocking him, but I did mock the liberal slant of the filename from that source. Is your political bias getting in the way of your comprehension? I think you're just trolling.

Seeing as how anything not liberal as leftist is "right wing propaganda", and you don't ever criticize anything on the left, I would definitely accuse you of doing the same thing. I'm definitely waiting on you to contribute something other than "LOLZ CONSERVATIVE PROPAGANDA." Just saying

See? You don't even read the previous post. I was poking fun at the liberal slant of the filename from that NY source. Duh. Should I just not bother responding to you because you don't read anyway?

In my defense, based on your posts and threads, there isn't much to "read", but in this case I apologize.

Obama is full of crap. He is just saying what people want to hear. He doesn't give a rat's ass about the tea party people.

It's a little unnerving, but nothing worth holding redneck Tea Party rallys over.

175 Million US households puts the debt at $72,417 per household.

I'll bet 98% of those idiots at the Tea Party rallys don't even know that the national debt includes debts such as mortgates, car loans and credit cards.

The right wing wants Republicans back in power to fix the very economy that they wrecked, but consider the following...

US Federal Debt as Percent of GDP by President

Look at that. The "small government, tight spending and good for business" Republicans seem to have a little problem living up to what they bill themselves as. No surprise. They just do the fake-out pandering for hick and Christian votes and then deliver pretty much nothing they campaigned on. When are you right wing voters going to learn?

Get a clue.

Realistically, the only way to have possibly fixed the problem in 15 months would have been to take drastic measures such as foreclosing on every American after missing 2 payments and then boot them out of the house very swiftly. As long as many Americans have mortgages they can't afford, there is going to be a domino effect.

Which brings us back to the Bush era when they should have corrected the housing program. Rarely do programs work according to the original terms. It was during Bush's run that lenders should have been regulated against giving mortgages to anyone with a pulse. Unfortunately, Republicans are highly against corporate regulation, so that wasn't going to happen.

You see, we are now witnessing those long term effects of Bush that so many crazy tinfoil hat wearing Democrats screamed about for 8 years.

You keep bashing the GOP, why? What can they do right now? Not a fucking thing. The democrats have been in power for over 3 years and spent a year in absolute power.
So please keep up with the real thinking.

I really don't like Obama, but he is starting to do some things that make sense, like opening up off shore drilling, I never would have thought a liberal would do that!
The other thing is student aid. I think this was a good move, I mean they guarantee it already anyways and these students will benefit from this. It does wipe out whole business's, that's the negative.

Oh and you might want to rethink the whole red neck thing, the tea party has doctors, lawyers, top level business people in it that are passionate about holding politicians accountable, do you have a problem with holding politicians accountable? And though they may be mainly conservative, they have in there ranks many independents and even democrats.

As for that wonderful chart you put up, see where the line dips during Clinton's time? That's when the GOP took over the house and senate in 96, so that kinda blows your theory out of the water. It wasn't the GOP, it was Bush and the rest of our government going to war. When the democrats came in, they were about as organized as a herd of cats and didn't do shit but let the US sink into the shit storm it's in now.

If we are to fix this mess, Obama as a leader needs to quit his one party leadership

He needs to get rid of NAFTA

He needs to get the troops out of 2 useless wars

and he needs to continue to get oil and natural gas from the HUGE reserves we have right here in the US and end the flow of money to the middle east and let them attack us with rocks if they want. Tell them if they attack us, we NUKE them. Once the economy is back on track to PRE war levels, then we can offer assistance to countries that need it.

You can put your tin foil hat back on now

think about that

that chart really is funny, if you look at when the GOP took over the house and senate under clinton in 96, the chart goes way down and when the democrats took over the senate and house under Bush in 2008, it went way up
