47% of Americans won't pay any Federal Tax this year

Nearly half of US households escape fed income tax
Recession, new tax credits have nearly half of US households paying no federal income tax

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Tax Day is a dreaded deadline for millions, but for nearly half of U.S. households it's simply somebody else's problem.

About 47 percent will pay no federal income taxes at all for 2009. Either their incomes were too low, or they qualified for enough credits, deductions and exemptions to eliminate their liability. That's according to projections by the Tax Policy Center, a Washington research organization.

Most people still are required to file returns by the April 15 deadline. The penalty for skipping it is limited to the amount of taxes owed, but it's still almost always better to file: That's the only way to get a refund of all the income taxes withheld by employers.

In recent years, credits for low- and middle-income families have grown so much that a family of four making as much as $50,000 will owe no federal income tax for 2009, as long as there are two children younger than 17, according to a separate analysis by the consulting firm Deloitte Tax.

Tax cuts enacted in the past decade have been generous to wealthy taxpayers, too, making them a target for President Barack Obama and Democrats in Congress. Less noticed were tax cuts for low- and middle-income families, which were expanded when Obama signed the massive economic recovery package last year.

The result is a tax system that exempts almost half the country from paying for programs that benefit everyone, including national defense, public safety, infrastructure and education. It is a system in which the top 10 percent of earners -- households making an average of $366,400 in 2006 -- paid about 73 percent of the income taxes collected by the federal government.

The bottom 40 percent, on average, make a profit from the federal income tax, meaning they get more money in tax credits than they would otherwise owe in taxes. For those people, the government sends them a payment.

that's what i don't understand about Republicans - Republican politicians have been spending money like drunken sailors and redistributing wealth for a long time. This whole Obama is a socialist panic is a little late in the game, should have cried earlier when Bush was in office.

Got to love that, 10 percent of the population pays almost 75% of the costs.

40% doesn't even pay a penny but benefits from everything. People who are not affected by taxes can cast a vote on issues that will require taxes to be increased. I think that is fucked up. One of the rights to be able to vote should at least be that you contribute in some kind of way financially to the country. If you don't contribute a penny then you shouldn't have a vote.

Just like the people who vote to raise millage to pay more for a public service like police department but those people don't own a home so they don't pay property tax. How does that make sense, why would anyone vote no to something that they won't have to pay for. In some areas there is more people who don't pay property tax than do, so you let the voting majority be the people who don't even contribute but yet they can dictate how much the people who do pay taxes will pay.

Check this out and try and do the math. 10% of pop pays 75% of costs. Less than 2% control all the wealth. What everything is there that the 40% benefit from. Ass exams or something? Seriously, who besides the top 1% or 2% get to enjoy shit from anything. You don't think those kids are dying in wars and shit do you?

Okay, my shrink told me I'm not suppose to be going here so I have to quit now before I pull an Oswald on someone.

Actually I do business here, you just troll for political threads were you can pretend to be part of the discussion, when in fact practically everyone already knows you have nothing to say.

Yes very good smut, I'm talking to him. I'm laughing at his hypocrisy, stupidity, and irony, of calling someone else a troll while the only purpose of his posts in any thread is to call me a troll, thereby making him a troll. Do you follow?

So what? They will get those anyway, or by right take them, correct? That's just basic shit you take for granted and some of that stuff you have to qualify for so don't start talking like it's all a freebie. I'll say half your list needs criteria at least half, except maybe roads if I'm not walking.

Read the -whole- article.

"The vast majority of people who escape federal income taxes still pay other taxes, including federal payroll taxes that fund Social Security and Medicare, and excise taxes on gasoline, aviation, alcohol and cigarettes. Many also pay state or local taxes on sales, income and property."

Yep, just because you don't pay income tax doesn't mean you pay no taxes at all. There are a million small taxes added on to just about everything that you still pay and you pay for them at the time of purchase.

I don't need to read the article, I know where federal income taxes go and what they pay for. Sure the people who don't have to pay federal income taxes still get hit with other taxes, they get social security medicare taken out of their check (if they work), they may pay state taxes, pay sales taxes etc...

HOWEVER, the biggest source of revenue for the Federal govt comes from individual (federal) income tax. Which 75% of it is paid for by 10% of the population. http://www.taxpolicycenter.org/brief...rs/revenue.cfm BTW, social security paid out this past year more than it collected from social security payments, where do you think the difference came from.

Here is everything the govt pays for with the money they collect.
http://centeronbudget.org/cms/index.cfm?fa=view&id=1258

What is sad is when you see how much of the federal tax dollars collected is going to pay interest on loans.
Quote:
In Fiscal Year 2009 (FY09), the Treasury Department spent $383 Billion of your money on interest payments to the holders of the National Debt. Compare that to NASA at $19 Billion, Education at $53 Billion, and Department of Transportation at $73 Billion.
http://www.federalbudget.com/

nice to see we spending 7x more money on interest payments than we are on education. The country keeps going into more and more debt and will need to collect more money in taxes to pay the interest on all of the loans made. And lets print more money and make the dollar worthless, yeah. The government breeds irresponsibility, from the way it spends money it doesn't have all the way down the all the free hand outs it gives to the people who should get off their ass and get a job instead of well fare.

i don't mind paying taxes. However I think everyone should. I don't think that 10% of the population should pay 75% of the taxes and a whole 40% of the population pay zero federal income taxes.

Are there any stats on how much taxes paid are indirect vs. direct?

As far as I remember here in Euro Trash EU it's something like 53 pct. are indirect (like 20 pct. VAT on anything you buy etc.)

So even that hardly any individual pays any direct income tax (and there is estimated only about 36 pct. direct income taxes being physically paid - the rest is "hidden" in front of the tax office) and there are hardly any property taxes - you always end up majorly ass fucked, as the everyday goods and services get artificially expensive.

So it is indeed a magical cycle - hardly anyone pays taxes so then they have to get money by taxing the consumption.

That fucks and lowers the disposable income just about for everyone BUT for those, that get the consumption "subsided" in ways I'm even terrified to imagine.

I'd be curious what's the indirect vs. direct in US
