Windows 7 installation help please

Hi any body good with windows installation ?

My son wants to upgrade from windows XP to windows 7 He has purchased the Windows 7 Home Premium oem

He has downloaded the compatabilty thing from microsoft When he boots from the windows 7 cd it does not boot up and it wont let him press any keys

Does he have to format the hardrive first and just do a fresh instalation as it seems to be incompatible with windows XP

He has tried following the microsoft upgrade instructions and it still just hangs his computer

Ok you do have the FULL install of Windows 7 right not the upgrade disc? Also I'm not sure what you mean by format XP? You mean format the hard drive?

Hi he purchased it from ebuyer and its the window 7 home premuim version at the top it says OEM system Builder Pack

he cant format window XP he has set the cd in the bios as first boot option. Then he has tried rebooting from the CD to format the hardrive when it say " Press any key to boot from CD" it does nothing.

"It does nothing" ...does it boot to XP, go to a black screen or just sit there saying "Press any key..." ??

I wouldn't have done that. You never know what you're going to get.

If you still have XP on the system then of course you're not going to be able to boot form teh windows 7 CD. If you have OEM it assumes you're using a HDD with nothing on it.

If you go back to the link I gave you and actually watch the tutorial you shouldn't have any issues.

Is the keyboard plugged in?

Sounds like a dumb suggestion, but I've seen and done some dumb shit while upgrading computers.

The best thing would be format the drive on another computer, then re-install into machine and try again.

The upgrade disc is the full install it just uses a different key as it's sold as upgrade.

halfpint > get him to back up all his important stuff and then do a full clean format + install.

custom install > delete partition > create partition > format it > install windows

everything will be nuked - needs to save externally his emails, address book, passwords, messenger history, documents, bookmarks, music, etc first.

That means he can only install it once on the original hardware of his current computer now. He won't be able to re-use the Key on a newer processor/motherboard.

For me back with my Windows XP, when I wanted to install the system, for some reason, i'd never let me use a USB keyboard, I couldn't press any keys, even though the keyboard lit up, so I had to use the adaptor to plug it into the old PS/2 keyboard port and it'd work just fine.
