Google's nightmare: Facebook 'Like' to replace links?

http://edition.cnn.com/2010/TECH/04/...ook/index.html

Interesting read.

I for one am not going to be putting Facebook "Likes" buttons all over my sites just to get some FB traffic though.

Where's "SEO Expert", I need that guru's advice.

I just checked my logs for one of my larger sites, 57 hits from Facebook this month, as opposed to:

Links from an Internet Search Engine - Full list
Engine Pages Hits
- Google 459866 467088
- Yahoo! 44795 45973
- Microsoft Bing 39885 40034
- Unknown search engines 9600 9636
- AOL 7996 7998
- Dogpile 2503 2503
- Google (Images) 2476 3636
- AltaVista 1264 1264
- MyWebSearch 1053 1055
- Microsoft Windows Live 1042 1389

I don't think they have an enormous amount to worry about just yet.

It's a smart idea. A huge social network of (mostly) real people that's placing weighted opinions on what they like. To a search engine, that's a goldmine. Hard to fake through bots and very relevant.

As long as Facebook doesn't like adult, I don't think this will have a direct effect on adult SEO, but in mainstream for sure.

Wise words as usual WG.

People on Facebook: More than 400 million active users
50% of our active users log on to Facebook in any given day
Average user has 130 friends
People spend over 500 billion minutes per month on Facebook

That's a lot of potential feedback right there.

That was funny. I haven't watched Southpark since they put out that crappy Saddam Hussein and the devil episode. After watching that I'll give them another go.

Facebook's strength is the amount of user data, not traffic or click throughs.

The likes could be a spammers dream or a very powerful analytics tools. Just depends on how they implement it.

That skateboard animation is only 41 frames. Incredible. Very nicely done.

I can't for the life of me see how Facebook could prevent it being manipulated on a wholesale scale by cluey webmasters setting up / buying thousands of bogus accounts. For what goal though? No-one I know searches for anything on FB as if it's a search engine.

My hunch - they are doing it specifically to get Google to buy them.

Facebook is waaay past the "get a google or yahoo to buy me phase" they are on their way to being bigger (traffic wise) then both. This is a major threat to google, and to be honest I am surprised Google didn't respond to Facebook much much much more aggressively over a year ago. The writing was on the wall. There is a long way to go for Facebook, but give them another couple of years and I really wouldn't be surprised if they turned out a fantastic search engine enhanced with social features and rankings. Google better get their act together with Google profiles/buzz, etc fast.

I run mostly mainstream sites and I've discovered that a few "well-placed carrots" really boosts Facebook traffic. The key is to get into the right network of high value "friends"
