Oil spill threatens US coastline - video

Seeking to blunt criticism of its emergency response, British oil giant BP vowed Friday to harness all of its resources to battle the Gulf of Mexico oil spill as the company worked frantically to stay ahead of the growing disaster and the blow to its carefully manicured image of environmental responsibility.

Louisiana and federal officials said BP's efforts so far were "not adequate" and that the London company should do more ? even with help from competitors ? to contain the approximately 5,000 barrels of oil leaking each day after last week's sinking of the oil rig Deepwater Horizon.

Documents also emerged Saturday which showed that BP played down the chance of such a massive spill occurring.

Company officials in a 2009 exploration plan and environmental impact analysis claimed that an accident leading to a giant crude oil spill, and subsequent serious damage to beaches, fish and mammals, was unlikely, or virtually impossible.

Early investigations have revealed that BP did not bother to install -- and that U.S. regulations do not require -- a backup device to provide another layer of protection in case the "fail-safe" shutoff valve failed (which is exactly what happened). Brazil requires such a device, and oil companies like Shell install it routinely even in the U.S. BP didn't because, at $500,000, it was "too expensive

Excellent video.

Halliburton also implicated in the initial set up. As i said before they should try the CEOs as eco-terrorists with mandatory death penalty. Cover them with oil and light them on fire.

Tell all other corporations if they cause an ecological disaster thru negligence the same thing will happen to their CEOs. This will stop any further disasters.

Fines will not work, they rarely do anything. Right now real hardcore legal action must be taken against these fucking assholes.

right to the point
"-- At the time of the incident, well operations had not yet reached the point requiring the placement of the final cement plug which would enable the planned temporary abandonment of the well, consistent with normal oilfield practice."

so thats it then, the final cement plug not in place...holy crap.

Everyone is calling this a spill, which I think is wrong. This isn't a ship with "x" amount of oil leaking into the ocean. Once "x" amount of oil spills out, disaster is over. Instead, what we have is a leak in an nearly endless supply of oil from underground.

I agree 100%, and I think they should outlaw offshore drilling altogether.

There are way too many of these things out there that could fuck up at any time and kill the whole fucking ocean.

And with no ocean life we would be fucked.

More than 2,000 people have been deployed to protect the shoreline and coastal wildlife, according to a statement from the Joint Information Center.

Surface estimates of the size of the slick and skimming efforts were hindered as the Coast Guard ordered boats and aircraft back to port because of stormy weather. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration previously estimated the well is spewing 5,000 barrels of oil a day. At that rate, the volume of the spill would exceed Alaska?s 1989 Exxon Valdez accident by the third week of June.

Why don't they close that well. The pressure at 5000 feet is like what, 150 bar? Even my diving gear is at 200 bar, which I can close and open with the twist of my hand...

It really is sad. The oil spill will ruin such a huge amount of ocean water.

Looks like its the least regulation money can buy. I'm not for BIG government, but I'm for government protecting it's people, and local industries. We're going to be hit hard here in FL, from the fishing industry, to restaurants, to tourism. I think the taxpayer will end up paying for it.

"Privatizing profits and socializing losses"

Republican, Conservatives, Tea Baggers, "So, Called" Independents, etc support this idea.

"Overall, Exxon has paid $3.4 billion in fines, penalties, cleanup costs, claims and other expenses resulting from the worst oil spill in U.S. history."
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23367654/

3.4 billion what a joke. And how much will BP actually end up paying after all of their lawyers whittle down the lawsuits? Compared to the disaster certainly chump change.`yes obama saying BP will pay for all of it....right.

still dont understand how they couldnt have a back up solution if the cement plug failed anyway (if they had a plug in place to begin with). like a TEAM of bathyspheres or bathyscaphes equipped to seal a massive leak. incredible.
