actually that is a bad idea, studies have shown it causes many drivers to speed up, which is bad for 2 reasons, speeding up to make it through an intersection and running red lights.

In Thailand a few other Asian countries there is a numerical countdown to the change so you always know how long you have to wait.

That doesnt make any sense. The progress bar is only on the red light. What you explain would be the case if it was on the green light.

I think it would be soooo much better. It simply makes too much sense to actually be put into use here in the U.S.

The problem I see with it is this-

If you can tell from a reasonable distance how many bars or seconds you have until the light is going to turn, someone approaching the red light can judge how much, if at all, they will need to press the breaks to pass the line on green.

You combo someone not coming to a complete stop before the light change, especially someone who doesn't drastically decrease their speed ,with someone coming the other direction that's trying to beat the red - you've got a sweet t-bone on your hands with possibly some serious speed behind it.

sorry, there's no story with the picture so i figured it was a bar showing the progress till a full red light, which has been studied.

I’ve seen some blinking lights. It kinda tells you how much longer it will stay red or green.

Precisely why it's a horrible idea. People aren't smart enough to give themselves a grace second or two before going when a light turns green as it is...this + people running reds = lots more accidents.

Slap a camera and send out tickets to drivers home address. That will make them think twice. It taught me a lesson

We have countdowns over here. Both for green and red light. I wouldn't say it affected driving in a bad way and its been around for a few years.
