One of the problems with the new Arizona law

...that I have not seen mentioned is...that Arizona cannot deport illegals...only the Feds can and they have indicated that they are going to be reluctant to do this because they do not like the Arizona law...in addition one reason the Feds do not do more deportations than they do...is because they have limited man power and funding. Thus Arizona either will be unable to enforce their law to its full extent or have the additional man power and funding burden to detain illegals.

Sheiff Joe said he will keep them in his jail. ICE really needs to step up and do their job.

If by "doing their job"...deporting illegals...I agree but they claim that they are to undermanned and under funded to deport everyone that comes to their attention. Apparently there are 12 to 15 million illegals in the country.

It is my understanding that there is an exodus of illegals from Arizona...to what extent I doubt that anyone knows...but if ICE will not deport illegals that are detained in Arizona the state will either have to let them go or go to the expense of providing the manpower...facilities and funding to keep them detained. I don't know if that would be more or less expensive for the State than whatever it costs them otherwise. I would think it would definitely slowly decrease the influx of illegals into the State...but of course will affect other states.

I'm sure once they start enforcing it (regardless of what they end up doing with the illegals once they have them in custody) word will spread quick and those that would have gone into Arizona will now go into NM, Texas and Cali.

To me the law isn't going to be all that effective until all the states in that area have similar laws and then they have the money and manpower to actually enforce it. On top of that they need to do something about securing the borders. As it is now they can deport someone from Arizona and a few days later they will just sneak into Cali or NM or somewhere else

On first glance, it would seem that this law would cost Arizona a massive amount of money... housing said illegals. But there have been many reports of illegals "fleeing" the state. They may not end up enforcing as much as they thought?

exactly. If nothing else these laws will hopefully push Obama to act and start getting some kind of realistic, effective national immigration reform and border security going.

They could make weekly trips to the border by the busload and let those who want to cross over just go back. If you don't want to cross over, you're welcome to go right back to a US jail.

That wouldn't be deporting them, would it?

Won't do a bit of good either way.

Deal with the actual problems not the symptoms.

Create some type of program for people that want to come here legally and work, pay taxes etc. and deal with the drug issue as well. Just rounding people up and sending them back won't do anyone any good.

That's patching a bullet hole in the head with a bandaid. The real issue is why is the Mexican economy failing its people. What pressure can the US exert on Mexico to improve its economy by opening its economy to investors and competitors? How can Mexico increase the purchasing power of its people and create more high paying jobs through foreign investments?

Glad the State has its own Border Patrol that can deport illegals.

You are right that is important, just shows how complex this is.

But at the same time where is the flaw in what I'm saying. If you have people that want to work, pay taxes and be productive why would you turn them away?

Yeah, a ton of lawns with lots of green grass growing wild here now, the real problem is all the rain makes it hard to mow.

I'm with you on this. I'd rather take all of the illegals already here, make them pay a fine to become resident aliens, thus forcing them to pay taxes in the future. Even if only 30% of them wind up paying, that's still plenty of money for the government to burn through.

All countries have rules to get in. The US also has to limit how many people from around the world that want to move here and can only allow a certain number per country.

Mexico goes over their limit.
