Why there won't be a .xxx landrush

So I know that a lot of people who have crappy domains or just got into the business are thinking that .xxx may be great. Finally a way to get a quality domain. I just have to get lucky and register that gem before somebody else does. Well you are totally and painfully wrong.

> All premium domains will be pre-registered by people who own the .com equivalent or another TLD
https://domains.icmregistry.com/faq.html#G

> All domains that are trademarked like "playboy" will automatically have rights to any .xxx domain

Hey but wait they can't trademark "porn" or "japan" can they? So I could get japan.xxx. That sounds sweet! Umm.. No!

> All ultra premium domains will be reserved by ICM and sold to the highest bidder or in backroom deals. See here:
https://domains.icmregistry.com/faq.html#E
"culturally significant" aka anything valuable

> .xxx will be worthless to landgrabbers. There are two possible scenarios here: .XXX becomes just another TLD like .info or .us or .bs. In which case you can spend all your time and money developing a .xxx only to see the .com version slurp your traffic on type-ins. Or .xxx becomes mandatory (highly unlikely) and all porn sites can only use that extension. In this case everyone with the .com takes the equivalent .xxx and you still have nothing.

The bottom line is that .xxx is simply a way to extort money out of the community $60 at a time. You'll buy it because you need to protect your .com but in reality you'll never use it. Also one other worst case scenarios is that .xxx isn't regulated by ICANN which means they can use sliding scale prices. They did this with .tv. $60 may be the basic price but for porn.xxx they could demand an million dollars or something obscene.

We have, as of Sunday morning 142,626 such names with over 30,000 received since Friday. As you can appreciate this is a moving target and we will update the rapidly growing numbers via our blog.
Is he to be believed? That's another question altogether. Is pre-registration a sign of "support" for the proposed sTLD? That's debatable.

Pre-registration doesn't mean people actually paid money. It only means that IF .xxx happens that people with other TLDs are interested in the .xxx equivalent. No actual financial commitment is required. Its primarily just to try to say there is support when there isn't. A few other dirty tricks that ICM Registry may pull.

> It says that you have to have owned your top level TLD since May 1st, 2006 to pre-register for a .xxx domain. What I am wondering is if that date holds a special significance. Did they pick that date because it falls before some of the more recent big domain purchases like porn.com? If so it may have been done to sell porn.xxx, sex.xxx and other high profile domains to the highest bidder.

> ICM says it will be holding "culturally significant" domains. Does this rule supercede any claim you may have to this domain? Is this simply a clever way to make huge backroom deals. I think it is.

> There are 100s of top level TLDs. There could be potentially tons of people all vying for the same premium domain. They claim to have some sort of secret tiebreaking system. They could sell their methodology or adjust it based on whoever pays them the most.

> Huge legal battles could ensue over domains like pussy.xxx. Pussy.org is the larger more well established domain but will the owners of pussy.com get the domain because that domain is arguably more valuable?

You guys have the power to stop .xxx dead. No one should register a single domain and soon, .xxx will become a ghetto of scammers and malware, just like .info. If you guys make it catch on by registering your .com domains, you will have screwed your own pooches. Personally, I'll never let a dime of my money hit fat-ass Lawley's pockets.

did I miss something? was there a decision made on the .xxx yet? I have been away from the boards lately...playing a lot of Handball.

I have seen a lot of word marks being trademarked with the .xxx at the end. Not sure how this will hold up in court, but I think you would have needed to trademark the term before they even came out to the public with the .xxx idea.

Bottom line is this, all of the good domain names are already being snapped up in pre reservations so all that is left will be the decent names. And let's not forget that this extension will not rank very well within google, much like the .mobi or .cc or .nu domains right now. Waste of time, I'm not going to be offering any of the .xxx domains to my clients personally.

Way too many "points" to your statement (why there won't be a .xxx landrush).

My two cents that I just posted on a few blogs...

"As a person that has been driving traffic to adult sites for over 10 years. This is a VERY BAD THING!

First of they are trying to extort all current adult domain owners into buying .xxx when we all already own .com. .net and .org.

Now get this a you can buy a .com, for about $8, a net for about $6, .org also about $8 all yearly fees. Check out this highway robbery they want $60 a year per .xxx domain.

For those like me that own close to 1000 adult domains that means going from $8000 a year in fees to $60,000, combing that with the mass piracy and damn tube sites, means it’s no longer a feasible business.

The worst part is that this is the first step it forcing censorship on the American public. The will try to force new legislation requiring all adult content put onto .xxx when there are millions of adult sites on .com, .net and .org so they can extort money from adult site owners and put them out of business.

Once they comply all the gov has to do is block .xxx and porn will be gone. Your right to choose what you want to view is being stolen right before your eyes."

Dont' forget the are also trying to sponsor a bill that will let the Pres, shut the entire internet down in an emergency. So don't think they won't go after porn once it's easy block becuase it's all on one domain.

And as stupid as the average person is, they will all think it a good idea to put all porn on .xxx names becuase then you can easily "Protect Children". If this was just about protecting children then give us the .xxx name if we already own the .com and let google add a way to redirect to .xxx like they have let .me users route their traffic to the U.S.

$60 a name is outrageous! I'd buy it if it was $9 or $10 but this means an extra $60k a year in fees in a industry that is already hurting due to mass piracy and fucking Tube sites (even worse than .xxx)

yep, it is a joke. However it would be pretty wild if they actually blocked these rights and people could register any name they wanted as long as it wasn't a trademark beforehand. Then they would ban porn on .com domains. Not really possible, but it would be a pretty wild shock to the industry

New IP version and protocols tunneling, custom alt roots.... It will be embraced in near future and existing use of domains (including .xxx) will be useless anyway. Future and income depends on your ability to drive and convert traffic, not domain names and existing attempts to regulate.
