I would imagine the catch is that even though it's Canada...it's pretty fucking close to Detroit, which is arguably one of the worst cites in the US at the moment.

Just a guess.

I was serious with my answer. I've been through and to that area countless times.

You could probably find something similar in Ontario, putting you close to Toronto and the US border.

From your saying the major failure its being in Canada. To skip that rather pathetic part, what makes Windsor much cheaper then say Oakville? Or Missasuga?

Is it bcs of Detroit only?

Where did I say it was a failure for being in Canada? I live close to the border and visit often. Would I do that if I didn't enjoy it? Have you seen the parks on the US side of Niagara Falls compared to the Canadian side? The US side is a joke...though we do have a Casino now.

What I did say was that even the fact that it's in Canada, doesn't save it from the fact that butts up to Detroit.

YES...Detroit IS that much of a shithole and Windsor IS that close that I would most certainly say that is does play a big effect.

Just move there if you do not appreciate the opinions of those you asked. It is only $600. If you don't like it, move again.

Where to then?

General rule of thumb, the lower the rent the greater the chance that the area is a shithole. In canada, you are often paying based on location. You could probably find a place for $500 but the area would be filled with scum and not the safest

Paying more is usually a good way to have better neighbors and a safer spot

ok i've lived here for ten years now so I'd like to think my opinion is worth something compared to the people who have 'passed through' anyway...

I grew up in the toronto area Oakville mostly and moved here for the job i have today.

Positives:

-If you have work already all the NO JOBS problems don't affect you in the least.

-Cheap rent, but also VERY cheap deals on homes too so what my dad payed for a 2 bedroom split level in Oakville you can buy a 4 bedroom with a pool out here...

-Close to detroit, most think this as a negative but the downtown core is perfectly safe during the day because cops are everywhere so nobody is doing stupid shit there. Comerica, ford field, hockeytown cafe, joe louis arena are all within a block or two of eachother and all things can be reached by tunnel bus, there and back so easy enough to get some entertainment in

- if sports isn't your thing there are some cool theatres that have good concerts and shows all year long, just as good as the ones they have in TO, sometimes better. Also really nice casinos on either side of the boarder if that is your thing.

- michigan is underrated for its nature but there are places to ski, tube down a river, camp all withing an hours drive of windsor so its not like you have to drive 3 hours up to muskoka to get to it like in TO. Also some really nice golf courses for good prices these days.

-redbull air races... fun as hell to watch i don't care who you are...

Negatives:

-No work, so if you or your gf/wife need to find some work it is pretty scarce, maybe the worst in canada, however it is getting better and wont be like this forever...

-It is an industrial town, so although there are attempts at expanding cultural aspects of this city it is still pretty lacking on that comparing to most bigger cities.

-Not all that many parks.. the % are pretty low around here but there are provincial parks in the surrounding areas within 45 minute drives so as long as you don't mind the drive there is stuff to get to.

-construction.. is endless.. roads roads and more roads.. just an ongoing thing for the last ten years, but this is the worst. That would have to get better though right? ;)

-close to detroit... it is safe on this side.. gang members can't cross borders.. they have records.. the wannabe thugs hit downtown very rarely but there hasn't been an incident in a while now so its not worth worrying about. When driving in detroit you should probably use google maps because you don't have to go too far off the grid to end up in a ghetto area..

-polution, worst air quality in canada, but toronto is not that much better so if you can stomach it there you can last anywhere...

I bought a house out here a couple of years back and I don't regret it for a minute.. People are a lot more social out here and being only 45 mins from detroit airport makes traveling extremely inexpensive compared to most canadian airports.

hope this helps anyway...

High unemployment, and high rental vacancies i think about 10 - 12% in the area lead to low rents.

Property values are pretty low in Windsor as well, among the lowest in Canada for a bigger city.

On the plus side the weather is warmer than most of Canada, its close to amenities in Detroit such as the airport, sports, concerts etc, and its not to busy so traffic is light.

Some suggestions.

1) Do not just go and view the property. Go and hang out outside for a few hours.

2) Visit at different times of the day, morning, afternoon and most importantly when it gets dark

You will have a good clue about how it is there.

pollution is bad but its not China bad.. I still have run marathons in the area and do all my cycling out here so unless its a real humid day you don't really notice it. Not like hamilton where you smell the air anyway...

I never hear planes where I am at.

what's the housing costs out in NS? I have been out to halifax twice and just love it out there, I think i go just for the seafood alone

one piece of advice I think is good, is to find an area where the average rent is higher than social assistance will pay

I was born and raised in Windsor.
Its a borderline hick town, and really, it is just a factory and University town at its heart. The only thing that sustained Windsor for so long was with Ford, GM and Chrysler all having plants based there. Then you have GE factory and Hiram Walker & Sons Distilerry down on the riverside.

The casino's have helped breathe new life back into the cities downtown core and city itself. 10-15 years ago, downtown Ouellette Ave. was becoming a ghost town. I haven't been back in nearly 6-7 years, so I'm not sure what its like lately.

Glen hit most of the negatives on the head.
Its an easy enough city to navigate. The Freedom Festival is kinda fun and the joint fireworks display for the July 1/4th celebration is a fun event.

I'll give you a piece of advice, stay off of Droulliard Ave. at night

I live in Detroit suburbs and work in Windsor. Cant complain about either city, its just where you live. Detroit city may be a shit hole but drive 10 miles from the 8mile road and you in one of the wealthiest suburbs in US, it even got a Ferrari dealership.

If you have a Job then this is one of the best place to live because every thing is cheap.

I'd rather live in Windsor than in Toronto. Toronto is crowded with crazy traffic and white people are clearly the minorities, and it's too expensive to live there.

Windsor traffic is a breeze, and the casino is great. Just seen George Thorogood play there a month ago.

It's economy was basically automotive-based, which would explain the lack of work and cheap rent.

I was doing a loan in Detroit...the appraisal came back at $2500 yes. That is two thousand five hundred.

I cried for the person. You could buy whole blocks for a few thousand dollars...

the entire province of ontario is 1 huge piece of shit. without government constantly funneling limitless billions of dollars into it, it would collapse. people in ontario are lazy, polluting, snob nosed pieces of shit.

if you enjoy expensive drinks, tons of traffic, butchy women and tons of blacks you will be in heaven.

do not come out west though we are full.

enjoy.

Windsor's two biggest downfalls to me are:
1. The lack of good paying jobs with the auto industry being down, but jobs are coming back slowly.
2. Property taxes are crazy high as compared to out west.

That said, I moved here at the end of 07 and love it. Tons of things to do in the area with good restaurants, especially on Erie St. In the summer there is usually a festival going on downtown on the riverfront every weekend.

The winter weather is pretty mild for Canada with the exception of Vancouver/Victoria. Summers get humid though.

Being close to Detroit is a bonus for sure. Like Glen said there is so much to do in downtown Detroit from hockey, football and baseball, to the museums etc. And depending on the border I can be at Detroit Metro Airport in less than 30 minutes.

I also like to be able to drive to major cities for weekend getaways. In about 4 1/2 hours or less you can get to Chicago, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Toronto etc.

That said, Windsor is an AMERICAN city through and through. It may be in Canada, but it has a distinct American city vibe and feel. I knew immediately why Canadians give Windsor a bad rap when I got here.

I'll give you that. So much in fact that Windsor is considered part of the Detroit television and radio market, thus is exempted from the 'CanCon' ruling that a certain % has to be Canadian content.

People I've met are surprised I'm Canadian because I do not have what is considered a typical Canadian accent

I was at the George Thorogood concert as well... great show

I've been in a Windsor for about 13 years now. I'm a Toronto boy, but Windsor has grown on me

$600 for 2 bedroom apartment in Windsor is too expensive. That place is a bit of a ghost town.

Ya George is still great, he looks a little rough but he plays and sings just as good as he did 20 years ago.

I saw him in Ottawa on this tour and couldn't believe when everyone sat down while he played...not only that but playing at the "national arts centre", they don't allow you to take drinks into the theatre...

Instead of paying $600/mo to rent a 2bdrm in Windsor, just go a bit south and buy one in Detroit for the same price.
