I have started watching more shows on BBC, using their downloadable BBC I Player
Anyone got any suggestions of good shows. So far I am watching -

iPlayer has a TOP SHOWS and a MOST POPULAR shows tab. I suggest you start there.

You are being able to use the Iplayer in the States (or are you here now?). It used to be geo blocked.

On top of those mentioned above (I totally agree with The Thick Of It/In The Loop..fantastic) the new modern Sherlock was pretty good.

It is a great show. One of my friends was an extra on the show this year (the street countdown episode) too.

Channel 4 has its own online player called '4 on Demand' and they run a lot of their shows legally on their Youtube channel. If you are going down that path I suggest trying out Peep Show too.

Yeah that show is hilarious. Sort of like the old "Yes, Minister"

However, I do wonder if it needs subtexting the US.. I doubt many Americans would understand the dialect given the speed with which words are uttered.

But would they understand "Allow me to pop a jaunty little bonnet on your purview and ram it up your shitter with a lubricated horse cock"

English is my second language, but I understand it completely. But I think its more a question of culture, mindset or state of mind, than actual grammar and vocabulary. Some may understand the actual words, but I dont know if all would understand the sum of it all put together.

Watching the show makes me feel like someone holding me by my throat and puncing reality into my face with a big fist. It's like the additive inverse of shows like "jersey shore" or "friends"

Homes Under The Hammer is so cheesy to be great. You have to love how they now have to stick the 'as evaluated in 2008' tags over the homes on the show because it is a different world now.

lol perhaps you have a point but I think the political ins and outs would be the greater challenge. For example, I saw Drop The Dead Donkey before I moved to the UK and didn't think it was that funny. Then I moved here and understood the system they were mocking and now I think it is one of the funniest shows ever.

Got to love the Young Ones. This little snippet was taken from another forum. Funny as hell.

Quote:
Neil: Guys, guys, guys, I think I've solved our money problem. I'm writing to my bank manager. See what you think... "Dear Bank Manager."
Mike: Yeah?
Neil: Well, that's it. I'm quite pleased with it so far, though.
Mike: Oh, well, it's a strong opening, certainly.
Vyvyan: I don't like the "dear." Sounds a bit too much like, "Will you go to bed with me?"
Mike: Well spoken, Vyvyan. What do you think instead?
Vyvyan: Uh, what about..."darling?
[everyone concurs]
Neil: [writing] "Darling Bank Manager..."
Rick: No, no, no, no, no, not "Bank Manager," it's far too crawly bum-lick. Tell it like it is, put "Fascist Bullyboy!"
Neil: "Darling Fascist Bullyboy..."
Mike: That's nice, yes, so far so good. So what do you want to say?
Neil: Well, basically, I want to ask him if I can have, like, an extension on my overdraft, but I know there must be a better way of putting it than that.
Mike: Well, what about, "Give me some more money"?
Vyvyan: ..."You bastard!"
Neil: Don't you think that's a bit strong?
Mike: Ah, Neil, people like that respect strength.
Neil: Yeah, you're right. Uh, "Darling Fascist Bullyboy, Give me some more money, you bastard..." Uh... "Love, Neil."
Vyvyan: Not "Love, Neil"! That sounds far too much like, "Come and get it like a bitch-funky sex machine!"
Neil: Yeah, you're right...Uh, what about, "Yours sincerely"?
Rick: Oh, come off it, Neil. If you're going to be that sycophantic, why don't you go 'round there now and stick your tongue straight down the back of his trousers?
Neil: Oh, look, I know, I know, why not "Boom Shanka"? It means, "May the seed of your loin be fruitful in the belly of your woman."
Mike: He'll never understand "Boom Shanka," you'll have to write the whole thing out.
Neil: Right, okay, here we go. "Darling Fascist Bullyboy, Give me some more money, you bastard. May the seed of your loin be fruitful in the belly of your woman, Neil."
Rick: Well, if that doesn't work, I don't know what will.

BBC radio news is even better in my opinion. When they don't need visuals they go even deeper. Check out some of then BBC news documentary pod casts on itunes. Those and 'From Our Correspondent' are always on my ipod.

Despite all the places I've lived, I've never been to Barcelona at all and I'd like to see it some time. A show I haven't been to at all is often more useful than one I've been to a bunch, so that really is a good idea to put that on the calendar this year or next.

I watch in the states by giving the Iplayer software a UK IP to keep it happy. Very simple.

Figured it was something like that. My mom is always interested in watching Eastenders but she would never figure out the IP stuff. Ever since they took it off BBC America she has bugged me about finding a way to watch it up to date but she won't pay for the pay per view service that shows it over here.

Grab her a copy of Hip My Ip is she uses a PC.

Very simple to use, just select the country you want from a drop down box and it switches the IP for you. The only problem with this is streaming video is tough as it buffers too much however downloading the content to play in windows media, mobile format or other player works great.

I see they now have a version for the mac so I might start using it again.

Next time I go over to visit I will try to do it for her and hope she doesn't mess it up after I leave.
