FTC Hit List

we all know this industry is plagued by short memories , but i believe i recall a few of the more unscrupulous (or should i say, ambitious?) in its ranks being hit by the FTC over the 13 years i've been a part of it. since we can all feel the next one round of indictments, suits and legal battles coming - assuming they aren't in full swing yet - how 'bout a list of previous programs/companies that had to pay the piper for bending over the customer or spamming them into oblivion?

3fn.net went down because of the FTC.

It also fucked quite a few little guys because of it! Legit and not Legit.

spammers aren't necessarily criminals... what cats are about to get hit for now? that shit is criminal and the shit is probably deeper than fines. credit card fraud earns time if i'm not mistaken.

i think topbucks, nastydollars and a few others settled with the FTC about CAN-SPAm related activities, whilst SixNine fought the same court case and won!

XPics.com - Fined by FTC for credit card fraud in July, 2000.
Zango - Fined $3M by FTC in Nov, 2006 for installing adware onto consumer's computers.

and lets never forget crescent publishing: http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/story?id=119523&page=1

unless the DOJ gets involved, in most cases the fines range from 10-30% of what the gross profit was...

the FTC are usually pussycats the first time around, but if they have to come after you twice, they will take it all...

Crap reasons or real reasons... Companies that gain the attention of the FTC have the money to settle or fight it, if needed.

More often then not. The FTC (i.e. Feds) are in it to make money.
