True dat.

It's been like 5 years or something, but I think my standard cardioversion is like $7.5k. Or it was last time. This time, got the stay of execution and sent home with some pills.

I can only imagine.

Apparently the hospitals are cutting back and fighting with the nurses unions. I had heard that before this visit from some laid off nursing friends over the past couple of years. The hospitals are trying to 'force the hand' but running on a skeleton crew I guess. Some think it is a way to show the Obama plan will not work.

Maximize profit, minimize labor. Time will tell..

No worries. Just some a-fib.

I have had it over a dozen times now. However, used to get it back when I actually drank. I had not had it since I stopped. Normally I would do the cardioversion. This time I snapped out with some pills, and sleep.

Thanks man. Appreciate it.

I do not worry about the a-fib stuff any more. It happens, you feel the heart fluttering, no pain at all, and because I have done it so many times I am fairly calm about it until I start getting disoriented or losing my breath.

Whatever they gave me this last time regulated my HR to a low enough point that they sent me home. Overnight while sleeping, it snapped back to normal. Which was nice.

Better start doing some cardio 3 days a week. My wife does and I do it with her....wouldn't change a thing now we are used to it.

Take care of yourself, at least you came home with some good news and can make some changes in your lifestyle

It was the first few times it happened. But after a few times, you just become desensitized to it. I fear staying IN a hospital more than t he cardioversion.

this is why healthcare is so expensive... most people without health insurance ( i dont know if thats the case with you or you just needed to go after your dr's hours) go to the ER for general treatment because they dont turn you away (at least the public ones)...

er care is ridiculously expensive and they have to write off a shitload of unpaid bills.

i needed to go see an ENT dr a few weeks ago and my dr was out of town. they wanted me to come in to get a refferal and i would have needed one if i wanted my insurance to pay for it..

its $30 copay to see my internist..

i couldnt wait. i went to the ENT and paid cash. do you know what i paid? $70..

do you know what my copay would have been for a specialist? $60

so it would have actually cost me more $30 + $60 to get what i got for $70

so for $20 less i went to who i wanted, when i wanted...

btw.. i pay $300 a month for health insurance and yes i do realize that i am paying in case of a "catastrophic"
health event...

if you dont have health insurance and need to go to a dr, always ask them what their cash rates are..

it seems cash is still king and especially in medicine...

Usually when you've got heart problems, you go to the ER if it's after hours. You don't wait until next day or so to make an appointment.

Yep.

When I worked in telco years ago, and would go into the DR's it would cost me $85-120.00 per visit billed to Blue Cross. Even if I was doing nothing other than getting a refill on a prescription.

After leaving telco and going into adult full time, same DR visit. $60.00 cash money.

My wife had to have her Gall Bladder removed.. Passed almost passed a stone at about 10pm. So we rushed her to the ER. next day took it our with scopic surgery Spent 2 days in the hospital.. Total bill. 4,100$ This happened to all take place in the newest hospital in Tijuana Mexico. The doctor asked if we wanted to do the post treatment and follow ups in his San diego office or TJ office.. He was an American doctor.

Lots of local clinics will be sharing the load when everyone has health care dont forget. Thats specifically so ER's dont see an explosion of people around the clock.

Glad you got relief and are feeling better.

That bill would have been much bigger here. I was billed nearly $8k for a one night stay over and a couple Tylenols in a US hospital.

When I was in the hospital, a girl came in one morning and stood me up, walked 12 feet down the hall and back. $150. Physical therapy.

Well, I have not received the cardiologist portion yet. That typically comes separate. Although he did not come into my room, despite nurse repeatedly saying he would be in to talk to me. The fact they paged him will prolly get this visit up to the $4k mark.

Good to see you a doing better again Foots. It sucks to have to go to any hospital in the first place. I've seen it 3 times the last year. Some nurses look pretty hot there though..

If you have any sort of knee isues or ever have, you don't want to spend too much time running on a treadmill. Even the very best machines end up having some movement both up and down with the deck flexing, and side to side with the belt moving. Although you mostly won't notice it at the time, it forces your knees and specificially the ligaments to work much harder to keep you stable and over time you can do serious damage. Better to do a steep incline at a fast walking pace if you have to use a treadmill. Otherwise, get outdoors.

Thanks for the tips.

I try and do a mix of it. When the GF is in town, here and I will go walk the parks, or mall. She jokes that, "I need to walk her", after we go to dinner. All the same, good info.

I have not worked up to be strong enough to last on any step incline. I have saw a few nice ones I would like to get later. Right now I can't last long on an elliptical. So have a ways to go. But at least making progress on staying active to some degree.

No fit nurses or did they all get advance warning you were coming and put 3 pairs of socks on?

Actually that's a quite quick visit for ER. Last time I had to go to A&E it took hours of sitting around.

Stay well

Christ I wish I would've went there - I'm paying on an $18,000 bill for tests, surgery, and 1 night hospital stay for my gall bladder removal.

Medical bills sometimes make no sense.

18 months ago I was in for 11 days, had major, major surgery and the bill was $19 or $21k.

The week before last I was in for a little more than 72 hours, had a short surgery (in, out and back in my room in 2 hours) and the bill was $7,900.

We have 3 local hospitals all within an eight block quadrant. They keep trying to "out-ER" each other. They have all built new emergency departments in the last couple years.

One now advertises that you will see a doctor within 30 minutes of arrival.

My wife sustained a head injury in December and we went to that ER. I was amazed when she was seen 6 minutes after we arrived. That doctor ordered tests and pain meds. He checked back with us every hour till he sent her home 4 hours after we arrived.
The bill came yesterday, 7 months later. $3844

I was glad that she was seen quickly, and they determined she had a concussion, but no brain bleed. She has seen her regular doctor since then, and she continues to have issues(headaches, memory issues)

What I am not happy about is her insurance declined to pay for the er as they deemed it as unnecessary treatment.
It wasn't like we strolled in there at 10am, instead of seeing her primary care doctor.
She fell and hit her head at 9pm, when the only thing open was the ER, and the dr's on call line said to take her to the ER.

I guess now I have to fight the insurance company. The insurance company doesn't seem to want to make that easy. They have a telephone number, but unless you are a doctor's office calling for an approval, they won't speak to you. They will only correspond by mail. I guess the letter writing begins.

My last ER visit. 15 total minutes(quickest hospital/ER visit ever). All I needed was antibiotics for an abscess. Doc or nurse came in, put on gloves touched my gum with her finger after i told her whats up. Said yep. Wrote the prescription. left.

750 dollars.

That was after being told by 3 people that it would be no more than 100 bucks.

Then when asked why even though I was told this, They then said that no one would ever give me a max money figure.

odd...

It's stuff like this that is infuriating.

Insurance companies are privately held companies tasked with nothing more than making money for their shareholders. In short, a shit poor (ie:exactly the WRONG) system to place in charge of peoples health care.

Good luck on getting it settled in your favor! You're up against employees who are paid bonuses for denying claims.
