Holy shit! How come nobody has thought of this before?

Quote:
Instead of spending millions to widen roads, the Shenzhen Huashi Future Parking Equipment company is developing a "3D Express Coach" (also called a "three-dimensional fast bus") that will allow cars less than 2 meters high to travel underneath the upper level carrying passengers.

China Hush, which has nicknamed the project "Straddling Bus" has details:

The model looks like a subway or light-rail train bestriding the road. It is 4-4.5 m high with two levels: passengers board on the upper level while other vehicles lower than 2 m can go through under. Powered by electricity and solar energy, the bus can speed up to 60 km/h carrying 1200-1400 passengers at a time without blocking other vehicles' way. Also it costs about 500 million yuan to build the bus and a 40-km-long path for it, only 10% of building equivalent subway. It is said that the bus can reduce traffic jams by 20-30%.

According to Engadget, construction of the first 115 miles of track will begin in Beijing's Mentougou district at the end of 2010.

Pretty stupid idea if you ask me... You think the general population is smart or skilled enough to maneuver through those without issues...

That will last about 15 seconds before someone smashes their car, truck, Buick, rickshaw, bicycle, motorbike, skateboard or whatever into it.

It will work fine ... yes, there will be accidents, but it's doable.

Baltimore City has a light rail that runs beside cars, through intersections and all kinds of crazy shit. There is an occasional accident, but not as many as one would imagine.

If you're doing this over a divided highway (click the link for additional photos), there should be no problem. It's nothing different than driving through a tunnel or an overpass.

Perhaps this is a better representation of how they can pull it off ... nothing different than throwing it up on jersey walls that already exist on a lot of highways.

With the cost savings to be realized, I'd bet that they improve upon it enough to make it a reality. Of course, we won't see it in the US for decades because we're stuck in the stone ages when it comes to public transportation.

Sounds dangerous if you are about to turn right or left with your car and travel in same direction.

The concept of solar energy and better public infrastructure sounds cool though.

Looks pretty hairy for the bus passengers! A few metres above the road surface and right next to the guard rail...

I could see a terrorist (or some other malcontent) driving under it with a pickup truck & setting off a fertilizer bomb or similar. 1200+ casualties, good way to make a statement.

The moment a car touches one of the rails its game over for the passengers, those traveling below that thing and those who are following close behind...

Yeap.... awesome idea for a major "clusterfuck of death"

Looks fantastic, however one flaw would be that if there is a slow moving vehicle in front (above 2 metres) then the bus is slowed down and any other vehicle behind above 2 metres will be stuck.

Don't live your life in fear. The same damage can be done on any railway, in any subway, tunnel or building, or on any bridge.

Set it on a double reinforced 8 foot jersey wall and problem eliminated. To make it even safer, make it like a monorail with horizontal and vertical wheels that allow it some bounce without derailing.

I'm shocked so many people think this is not doable -- at least over highways. If everybody had the same attitude, we wouldn't have airplanes. Imagine how dumb it sounded the first time someone said they were going to fly in the air.

I agree. I cannot imagine it working as proposed in an urban environment. Slapping it over highways connecting cities though -- totally doable, IHMO.

You can only build 10 buses for the price of one elevated train. From a cost standpoint, seems like an elevated train will be better since it is much safer which means less costly accidents later on.

Just think of the contractual money our politicians can pocket pushing something like this. I believe it's workable ... BUT, the crooks will step in BIG TIME . The big GRINS are probably already being practiced by the politicians.

Even if this turns out to be too radical an idea i'm sure something will come out of it even if it has to be changed a lot in reality.
