Banning IPs on a board/blog - still sustainable?

With loads of mobile connections, phone or USB wireless internet sticks, is it still a good idea to ban based on IP address? How do you ban spammers or unwanted users?

I'm asking as I saw I was banned from my own board using a Vodafone wireless internet stick today

Nobody's gonna spam you from their iphone.

But spammers have learned to use proxies long ago. There are whole forums dedicated to keeping spammers supplied with fresh ones.

I think if you find a way to ban based on some combination of browser cookie, flash cookie, email, IP and mac address you can keep all but the most dedicated spammers away and busy on your competitor's sites.

I find it amusing when people try to ban my IP. If I want on your forum the only way you will keep me out is to shut the server off.

Yes.

I have blocked out all of Russian, Africa, China and some other countries and eliminated all the spam bullshit on forums and boards. I do not worry about blocking out those countries. They can take up the gripe with their countrymen.

It's almost impossible Closer. I have the same issue.

I ban an IP of some troublemaker, he reboots his router, gets assigned a new IP address, and hey presto, the asshole is back.

I heard something that's probably wrong, but machines will all be assigned a specific IP in IPV6, it should be easier for board owners like ourselves to ban these asshats for good then. Several years away from what I gather.

Yeah, I already did that, this helped for a while until they found Canada as a new base...

Ah, they are such a pain .... I just keep on banning them, I really don't see the point for them to keep coming back, they really must have no life at all. Most of the bans are not even SPAM, just some assholes who keep on posting illegal shit. Seems it's going to be like this forever then or, as suggested, enable moderated registration.

It's getting to the stage I'm going to hire someone to get rid of these assholes on a daily basis, and deal with all the other cack we go through which is time consuming and NOT what we're in it for.

Is it Chuck Norris?

I worked for a firm who used to go round the world and gut companies laying people off, and outsourcing their workers, there's nothing much I don't know about business practices.

Difficult to troll if you've had your fingers cut off...
