How do partners protect a domain name?

I was asked by someone recently on how two partners can protect a domain name, so that one cannot steal it later on from the other

E.G. Two people want to own a domain name, and be able to control what it does.

But one partner lives in one country, and the other lives on the other side of the planet

any ideas?

Putting ownership of the domain in a Lawyer's escrow account (or other account under the lawyer's control) might work.

this way, if there is a dispute the lawyer has both of you by the balls...

I don't think there is really a good way, you just have to trust the partner...

You have to go with trust.

Tie it up too tightly legally and you may have problems if one of you is run over by a bus. Lawyers always win.

What about putting it in a corporations name that you both are 50/50 owners of? Not sure if legally a domain name can belong to a company like that. But it would be worth the time to ask I guess.

My advice is to go with cautious trust. If there ends up being issues down the road, no one will win but the lawyers. So, one of you own the site name. One of you control the money the site generates. That should help keep both parties honest. A little system of checks and balances.

Of course you can have a domain in company a name, but one of the partners will need to have access to the registrar and that person will be able to transfer the domain name quite easily...
good luck getting it back once he/she does that...

Best idea so far...as you once told me Dan..."Leave nothing to trust" and it makes for a better business relationship
